Hi Everyone, I have read and learnt a lot from this message board and thanks to everyone for that. I have a 6 month old GSD whose ears are up (both). The right ear was down a little during teething and it is back up now. However the problem is the ear setting in the head; the right ear is set perfectly. While the left ear is up, it is slanting towards the other ear (50 degrees) just like it would be in a puppy.

The question is will this become alright as he grows up or should I do anything about it now ? The last time the vet checked him (a month ago) he said taping is not necessary. He is Zamp's grandson.

Thanks

That is the TEEPEE head stage, in this case a half teepee.  My first Shepherd was on the same schedule as your dog.

Thanks Michele. I understand TEEPEE now. Should I provide some help by taping ?

if his ear is up, just slanted, don't tape.  it could make the problem worse.  I only tape when the ears are not coming up. give him some bones to chew on or a kong.   it will help strengthen the muscles and help the ear to straighten.  or his ear may always be like that.  years ago I had a adult male who had both his ears like that. sometimes its caused by the ear bases being positioned  in the wrong place on his head.

This is my first shepherd at 5 years old.  I did not tape him.

Big head with antenna ears.  He did a half teepee also.

There are many more experienced Shepherd people here who can give you lots of good advice about taping or not taping.

Do a little searching and you will find several threads about ears and various taping methods and opinions.

Please post pictures of your dog - a good head shot.  That will give people more to go on than a description.

Play tug and you may consider feeding your pup chicken drumstics (ONLY RAW-COOKED CAN SPLINTER)

 Hello Everyone,

Thanks for the information. Here is an older picture of him. SInce then the right ear is fully up set right. However the left ear is still as shown in the picture - up and slanted.

I am trying to get a new picture of him.. In the mean time, just to show how he looks now, I came across this picture in the web and his ears look *exactly* like this of the dog below..

Hope this helps and thanks again for taking the time to help me out..

If it's any encouragement, my guy's ears resolved themselves with no assistance.  They both slanted to his left, with his right ear almost laying on his head.  He looked like he was standing in a perpetual windstorm until he was around eight or nine months old.

I worried so much about Beckett's ears when they were coming up....I should have just enjoyed them & their goofy stages! I'm sure his ears will be just fine. Give him plenty of chewing time & excersize, & they'll come up. Strengthening the musculature of the head & jaw works better than taping, which if not done correctly, can do more harm than good. He's a very sweet looking boy. Have fun! jackie harris
