This GSD competed last fall in the AWMA Nationals, he was not yet 2-years old at the time.  He not only passed his IPO 1, he won the high IPO1 for the trial, high IPO1 obedience, and over all high score in trial Alternative Breed.  His obedience was amazing then and even better now, truely something to watch.

All without ever wearing an e-collar.

Just an example.

Shade has done a super job with Reiki.  Oh! By the way, she has not even used a pinch collar.

That’s a good team and fun to watch!

There is no doubt that a dog can get a title without an e-collar. But doing well at sch3 in a big trial is another matter.

Why?

You could also build an entire house without a hammer, but why?  It's just another tool, but you have to be intelligent enough to use it properly.

I apologize in advance for this stupid question. Is the 'level of heeling' in the video for competition only? If she was out for a walk through town would it look like that? I would like to train my dog to heel but I'm not sure if I need or could ever get that intensity but I'm not a competitor.

Did the dog begin to watch her master like that anticipating a treat, and now it's watching for instruction and/or a treat? Again, I'm not a trainer or a competitor, I open my home as a foster home for rescue Shepherds until the rescue finds them homes and I like to work with them while they're here.

Christopher as I'm sure you know, the foundation work for both IPO1 and VPG1 is the hardest. Once this is in place, it really isn't that difficult to finish up the titles - if this team is doing this well, and the trainers methods are working for them, there is no reason why they can't continue to do so at big trials, small trials, and everything in between. Not every dog needs an e-collar, as this clearly demonstrates. Perhaps you need it for your dog - this trainer opted for another approach and has been highly successful. She doesn't need to change a system that is working, and if she decides to go to the Nationals I've no doubt she will do well....

Time will tell.
