My 9 month old started her first heat Feb 19. (10 days ago.) She's staying at a friend as I have an intact male here. She has stopped bleeding now and was wondering how long before it is safe to bring her back? I just talked to my friend and said next weekend but is that too soon? I know it only takes a minute for "accidents" to happen.

I know of a female that would usualy be bred on day 18 of her cycle, and yes they can suprise you how fast they can get a tie..so be really careful...

Usually it is when the bloody discharge starts to GO AWAY, she is most likely to be bred. I'd give her another full week away, bathe her good before bringing her home then guage your males level of interest.

do they have to get a tie for puppies?

Good idea on the bath, I didn't think of that. Thanks!

I thought they had to have a tie. I'm not a breeder and haven't had many females over the years so don't know a lot about heat cycles except what I've read. Just trying to avoid any accidents as the dogs live together in the house. No outside kennel to separate them.

I know of female with pups now I saw the breeding there was no tie and had 6 or 8 pups

Does not have to be a tie. When you do an AI  , it is simply getting the sperm into the canal

If a male is quick on the draw and it is a full ejaculation into the vagina chances are the sperm will travel right into the eggs and pups will be born.

If you witness, as when you do an AI, walk the bitch immediately and do not let her urinate for 5=9 minutes .

Naturally , a tie is preferrable.

A local breeder told me he once had a tie through a cyclone fence. How does that work? I told my friend just to keep Bella in her crate all week as her privacy fence has a few knot holes in it.
