  Here is one happy ending:

PRESS RELEASE
Military Working Dog Hero Returns Home in Honor

Military Working Dog Dexter C067 returns to the USA on December 30, 2008 at 6:32 pm to a Hero’s welcome. MWD Dexter, accompanied by his former handler MA1 Kathleen Ellison, flies in to Milwaukee, WI, Airport from Naples, Italy, the location of the base from which he retired.  Ellison, currently deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, is using her two weeks’ R & R to make sure her former partner is settled into his new digs before she heads back to the war zone.

Dexter gained national notoriety among animal lovers, when it appeared that he was slated for euthanasia. Hundreds upon hundreds of phone calls poured into the offices of Congressman Walter Jones (NC) and Congressman Maurice D. Hinchey (NY) pleading for them to intervene so that MWD Dexter could be spared from this tragedy.

Enter Illinois-based Save-A-Vet led by Veteran Danny Scheurer. Save-A-Vet is a non-profit organization which has dedicated itself to the care and well-being of all military and law enforcement working animals deemed too aggressive to be adopted into normal civilian life. Save-A-Vet will be caring for Dexter

On December 31st at 11:00am MWD Dexter will become the first K-9 accepted as a card holding member of the Local American Legion Post 703 Fox Lake, IL during a public ceremony at the American Legion Post home on route 12 in Fox Lake. He will then be introduced to his new home where he will begin his retirement with Save-A-Vet. Post 703 will also be working to get Dexter accepted through the American Legion National.  Later, in January 2009, Dexter will have his first American Legion meeting, where he will meet his fellow Legionnaires and be voted in by all post members.

One of MWD Dexter’s heroic exploits includes his detection of explosives concealed in the gas tank of a garbage truck trying to gain entry into Abu Ghraib Prison in 2004. It is estimated had Dexter had not alerted MA1 Ellison to the threat, more than 1,000 US troops would have been killed on that day.
