At a recent get together of schutzhund enthusiasts, american street ring fans, and police dog trainers, a question come up.   Could you do decoy or helper work for protection training your own dog?   For instance:   A husband and wife with their club dog house pet?   A police Department with 2 k-9 handlers, working their and each others dogs?   A serious competitor using a back tie doing prey and defense on their own dog?   Just wondering what some of you guys believe and or experienced first hand.

husband and wife,,,,yes have done it.

not a police officer

back tie,   done it.  on both a very prey female and a pretty serious male.

i have been doing helper work for a few years, and with the help of some expierenced  trainers have learned a lot.  im not saying anyone could do it.   you can also screw a dog up if you are not careful.

For a PPD ......NEVER! For sport.....do what you want. For Police.....they are going to do what they want regardless IME.

Yep it can be done.  I did a lot of my dog's foundation tied to a pole and with me doing the early helperwork.  Once she came off the pole my husband did the majority of the helperwork for her.  She's not a kennel dog and she sleeps on the bed with us and is my youngest son's very best friend.  She is the family pet :)  Oh... and she also scored a 95 in protection at the 2008 UScA GSD National Championship in Texas this past fall.  So having Dad do the helperwork doesn't seem to have a negative impact on her :)

PPD yes you can but not all the way through, at some point it will become counter productive.

You can work your own dog all day long......as long as you do it in prey. You should not work your own dog in aggression for obvious reasons.  I decoy my own dog in prey. When it comes time to do work aggression I go to outside decoys

Most LE handlers have to decoy each others dogs. they don't have the luxury of outside decoys

Two exceptions

If your dog has handler aggression issues----pretty self explanatory

I had one very handler sensitive bitch that could not deal with it.

I decoy my own dog for two reasons

1) I don't have anyone else in my club to do it

2) Why pay someone $20-$50 to work your  dog when you can do 80-90% of it yourself?

With sport work, sure. It's just a choreographed game anyway. I would not recommend that for a true PPD or Police work. But for Schutzhund there is a lot that can be done by yourself or with a spouse.

John,

That would be Nick and his bitch Zena.  Mark is not a helper for our club....he is Dean's helper but does help out from time to time but our club helper is Nick.  Nick does such a good job too!
