so you got a dog that will bark when strangers show up.  maybe you can even alert them on people.  say you have one that will actually bite someone who isnt wearing scratch pants,  a bite sleeve, or a full suit.   i wont count  a hidden sleeve  as equipment.

do you see that as an asset to protect you or as a liability that they might bite someone and you will become responsable?
im leaving the door open on this one to see where it goes.

asset.

A dog that is trained to attack on command is safer than one who isn't.
A protction trained dog must be social, relaxed and have good nerves. They must be calm in the presence of people. But when their owner tells the dog to attack he will defend his owner at all costs, and of course, out on command. I would definatley own a protection trained dog.

Dogs that aren't protection trained may react agressivley in situations that it shouldn't. A protection dog will only get aggressive when the owner/handler tells the dog to go for it.

Good Topic John!!! You read my mind. I was wondering the same thing for the past few months. I've been talking to a lot of trainers and dog people in general about protection dogs. I'm very much so interested in training in personal protection. But I've heard some negative things about liability.

Here are a few scenerio(s) i gave when asked questions:

If a burglur breaks into your home and trys to harm and steal things...and the dog bites can you get sued? Even though he is protection you.

If i was walking down  the street (night/ dark)  and a guy try to mug me and the dog bites and takes down the guy can I get sued?

In general different scenarios like the ones above am I at fault??....Well according to many people yes because that guy (bad) can sue me in civil court. Which I think is dumb because he is the attacker and I was being protected. So there is a liability at steak.

The dog is a asset because it saved your life. I plan to talk to a few lawyers before I purse the sport/ training. My opinion if the dog has titles and certification proving he is not a harm to the public and properly trained there should be no issues. I was told only police officers with police dogs are the only ones who can not get sued.

a PPD is a defensive dog not an offensive. It will Never bite without a Reason and Will always bite in situation of a threat.

remember the desire to rptect its master  comes from the Pack Instinct to protect one self and the pack members.

so what if you cant alert your dog with your voice?

im not worried about a civil case.  make sure the bad guy cant testify, and call it self-defense?

i wonder what the crime stats are of people with a large dog with them being attacked, robbed etc?

It will depend how you train your dog.
"A protection dog will only get aggressive when the owner/handler tells the dog to go for it." nope my dog is trained to attack as soon as someone makes a move at me. Once again it depends how you train your dog, and for what.

IS a protection dog a liability? If you not a responsible owner than it is, but than so do pets.

Asset? You have to excuse me on that one I don't view my dog's in that terms. When situations get bad I rather handle them my self than send my dog. Good topic though. I think for police it's def. an asset, same for military.

PPD is deffensive and offensive, my dog is expected to attack on a static decoy if asked.

"Asset or Liability?"

For the majority of people it is neither, more like a dream they couldn't handle even if they were lucky enough to have it.

I think Von Stephanitz once said,  " you should be so lucky "

Both. But if you are a good handler the liability is very low

I guess my point of view is this, if a suspect comes to rob or hurt me and my family i would rather be suid and alive than a statistic or front page news. Also if someone breaks into my house even after hearing the dogs barking he probably wants more than my TV so let him sue me. Also a correctly well trained dog looks and acts like a pet until he is needed. I love my dogs but they are here for a reason........
