I am putting together a Dog Competition Fundraiser to help raise money for the American Cancer Society this summer. I have two indoor training centers that have offerred to donate their facilites and equipment.
My idea is to contact training facilities and recruit them to form a team of their clients and work toward training their clients in a set of exercises based on pre-novice, novice and advanced.and then compete against each other. I have worked up a Pre-Novice set of exercises and now am putting together the Novice and Advanced. I am using various exercises from AKC obedience, Rally , Agility, and Schutzhund obedience. Each Team would compete in their level and then total score added up and averaged out by number of competitors per team. We will have have prizes for highest team per level and highest overall team in all. We will also award to highest dog competitor team as an individual in each level and high individual team in trial.
The competition will be in the suburbs - west of philadelphia.
I have two people qualified to judge, but could use more volunteers, stewards and or competitors.
I was wondering if anyone has ever held such a fundraiser and if they would be willing to share their experiences.
If anyone has put together variouse exercise that were used in this type of competition that I may be able to use for the Novice or advanced I would appreciate that information.
So far I have 3 training facilities on board to bring teams. I am hoping to have at least 7 teams compete, but would love to see many more to make this a successful fund raiser.
My idea is to give trainers a chance to show the results of their training in a fun environment and of course to raise money for the ACS. Our paper will provide plenty of coverage for the competitors and trainers. In addition I am hoping that pet people will become more interested in training their dogs further and possibly competiting in future.
Last year our Bark for Life raised $94,000.00 and our german shepherd team was 3rd highest fundraiser and individually had 3 out of 12 of the highest individual fundraising dogs.
Any thoughts, advice or any one interested in joining, competing, etc, please contact me.

The only SchH-related fund raisers I know of were (are still?) the Lady's Cup Trial that Stanislaus S.C. held for years to raise $ for our WUSV team. If you didn't happen to BE a "Lady" you were required to dress as one. The club had junior fashion and make up consultants well-armed with tacky garments, too much make-up and very poor taste standing by for anyone whe "forgot" their costume. Of course it didn't go in our scorebooks. The judges & helpers were subject to the same dress code as the entrants of course , and we cheated like mad, but it was a gas and drew entrants from far and wide.
There were trophies for the classes, B and C only as it was held at night. It included a very popular Veterans Class for retired dogs (hello 18" hurdle and wall so low it nearly collapsed) Some of the handlers dressed the dogs to match/compliment their costumes. Of particular merit was USA Judge Al Kerr and his long-coat Harro son Filou Ot Oeding, SchH3, dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and one of the 3 bears. About halfway through obedience Al pulled a pinch collar out of his little basket and added a more serious touch to Filou's routine to the loud glee of the audience.
I still have pix of Dean and Gary in drag. :-D I can't find the one of Dave Schroeder (God rest his soul) dressed as an S & M queen, complete with black leather lingerie, cat o' nine tails and trendy reversed pinch collar belt, judging that year's event.
Good luck!

The ladies cup sounds like a blast. I will have to see if we can incorporate something like that into ours.
I am still working on the date - as that is the big hurdle. I want to make sure that it does not clash with any local schutzhund trials and or akc obedience trials. That is why I was thinking to hold indoors in the summer as I know Molly does not perform well in the heat and I know that the akc shows slow down.
I would love you to come and either participate or help/judge? I know we could use your experience.
Beetree:
Thank you for your ideas. This all started 2 years ago with a canine walk - 100 dogs and their owners raised $24,000.00. Last year we tripled in size and really broke the bank. This year my team is selling ornaments, with hand painted pictures of your pet on them for $15.00. I have already received orders for 46 ornaments which I find amazing since I missed the Christmas season. In addition the artist is offering hand painted portraits of your pet on an 8x10 canvas framed and one matte for $30.00. I have an oil painting of Reno that my father gave to me as a gift and his work is spot on. Even captures the gleam in your dogs eye, lol.
Our GSD Team is really in the lead as we have so many ideas. This year we are holding a show and go the day of the relay and have organized games that anyone and their dog could participate in - musical sits and high jump. It was a blast seeing all those people compete. Our GSD Team does have an online donation section and that really helps. I have been slow to start my fund raising this year as sometimes life gets in the way. My mother is with me in hospice care (brain stem tumor) and cannot be left alone, so getting out of the house is difficult. I am hoping that between the trainer competition and our pet portraits the GSD Fan's Team will be in the lead this year. I just love it when our breed is at the top.

The competition will be a combination of ob exercises, so I am sure you are more than qualified. Each level will have description on how to perform the exercise and what dedcutions would be made for repeat commands, tight lead, disqualfications etc.
From your exerience, you have more than enough to be a judge for the advanced level.

Hi Cheryl, good luck with your event. You do a great job for a great cause. As we discussed I will be doing a dog walk in April for Pancreatic cancer. Thanks for the advice and ideas you gave me, I really appreciate it.

You won't believe but I was thinking about the guess how many biscuits raffle as well on my drive home tonite! Too funny.
We have a date for the competition as well as a location. Wagsworth Manor has graciously donated their facility for the day. They have both indoor and outdoor facilities that we can use.
Date: May 9, 2009, Time still to be announced.
Details will follow for the "Leader of the Pack" obedience competition.
