Oh, it will makeyou cry, a lot.  I really think the author must be familiar with the GSD.  I recommend it to every one.

In summary, it is the story of a family in MN.  They are continueing the legacy of a breeding program established by dad's father.  The lines, dogs the dad meet on the streets and decided had characteristics to make the best dog, he created a "Sawtell" line.

The story revolves around the grandson, Edgar who is mute.  He learns to train dogs in his fathers footsteps. A major crisis effects the family and Edgar does a lot of growing up.

It was an Oprah Book, BTW.

I read the beginning in the book department at Walmart. Couldn't afford to buy the book at $18.78 and the library doesn't have it so I may never get to read it all the way through, but it sure looked good.

I my daughter read a great book called Cracker about a GSD military dog. She loved it, great for any of you with kids 8-12ish.

Shelley, did you ever pick up Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss? That book was spectacular, cant wait for the second installment.

No, I haven't bought any books for awhile. Luxury items like books are some of the things I have had to skip for awhile in favor of groceries and dog food. .

Read it  a few mos back, library ordered it from another for me.  It was good, but took me awhile to get into it.  The big thing for me was how  they kept the litters for several months to prove their worthiness for the breeding program.  THEIR training techniques so the dogs couldn't fail if put in the wrong environment.  Then charged big $$ for well trained proven dogs. The ending could have been better, but I liked the way the dogs carried on...
