Ok, try to remember back in the day when you bred your very first litter. How did you advertise your pups? Yes, I know when you are a good established breeder you don't have to advertise, but when you were new I'm sure you had to advertise. So, what did you do?

When I bred my first litter in the early 1970's, I advertised the pups in a dog training magazine as I wanted to target people who wanted to work their dogs and I was active in competition obediance at the time. I also advertised in a classified sales "bargains" magazine as I thought, in my naivety, that people would look there if they wanted to buy something, whatever it was and they had a huge Dogs for Sale section. The enquiries from the sales magazine were those looking for something cheap (first lesson in putting price in the advert, would have saved me hours on the phone getting insulted by people telling me my pups were not "bargains" so not worth the asking price even though they had not even seen them!), the dog training magazine atttracted few enquiries, but the ones I got were not time wasters, if I had what they were looking for, they bought and the rest of the pups went to people who either knew my bitch or the Working Trials Champion who sired the litter.

I advertised my first litter in the Sacramento Bee in 1986 for $600. each. I got great results, wonderful puppy owners that I remained friends with till either the dogs or the owners (or both) passed away. I still advertise in newpapers occasionally, mostly for training. A lot of people who call don't pass my screening to get a pup. Still, the response from the newspapers is better than what I got from my ads in dog World, Dog Fancy and Dogs USA. Talk about some wierdos.

With my website and through word of mouth. I tried advertising one female, after I did prelims, on siriusdogs.com, but still ended up selling her through word of mouth.
