Canidae vs TOTW - Page 1

Hi all, I have a question about these two dog foods. A few weeks ago I posted a question about how people liked Task of the Wild and I got great reviews, however I have been reading some of the back posts on this list and there was one post that showed a web site about Canidae dog food (Canidae class action Lawsuit) and that it was making dogs sick. So that dog food was out of the question for me, now I am finding out that both Canidae and TOTW are made from the same manufacture Diamond. Do you think there is any concern about TOTW knowing it, two, is made by the same manufacture as Canidae? I may just go back to Fromm...... Thanks Peggy

If only I had know about Fromm sooner, I previously had been feeding Canidae, but they increased their
price, and changed the formula to save themselves money, and reduced the amount in each bag,

TOTW and Canidae are all Diamon line, during last recalls TOTW was the only one not effected by it as it did not use rice. If I would be going to a different kibble than Orijen is number one (I like their 6 fish formula). They are not made by Diamond so you running less of a chance in the future recalls. Currently I feed Orijen 6 fish 50% mixed with 50% of Vet's Choice. I pay about 65.00 for 30lb of Orijen and only 40 for 40lb of Vetschoice this helps me keep my cost down while still providing good food to my dogs. I happen to feed Vetschoice for some time now and to be honest there is no difference between how my dog look or acts or stool size between the both foods. So if the cost would be an issue I would feed just Vetschoice, but since I do like the idea of mixing my dog food selection i do 50/50 split which still is quite affordable and provides good amount of protein to my dog (not excessive).

They use Organic chicken and all their ingredients are 100% US made.

actually the recalls from Diamond involved one shipment of corn, not rice.  So most of their higher-end foods were not affected.   TOTW is no-grain - Canidae is not.  I did not know that Diamond makes Canidae - are you sure?  News to me.  I recommend TOTW over Canidae.

I feed Pinnacle, made by Breeder's Choice. It is also made in it's own private plant, so no chance of contamination from running another lower quality kibble through it's machines. I have been feeding it for years, my dogs coats always look great. It superbly maintains my dogs in training, pregnant females, etc. They also have a multiple dog or breeder's program where if you buy 10 bags and save your UPC's and receipts, they send you coupons for 2 free bags. Most importantly, the dogs LOVE it. I feed the Chicken and Oats formula. A large size bag is about $45.00 in my area. Most Petco's are beginning to carry it.

TOWT is what many people on my SchH club are using and are happy with it.

Individule ingredients are obtained from a limited number of sources (just like with processed people food).

While there are many, many different brand names and recipies, the sources of the ingredients are from only a handfull of different sources per ingredient.....

Find a dog food that has as many "flesh" (meat, poltry, fish, egg, milk)  ingredients (excluding by-products) before the junk ingredients start.......and go from there.

TOWT has 4 or 5 "flesh" ingredients listed before the junk begins, and a few added in the middle.......

ingredients are listed by weight........so......

fresh flesh (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk) has lots of water that is removed as part of processing the weight is taken before water is extracted so its misleading.

flesh meals are dried forms of flesh so the weight is more accurate

flesh by-products are not good - avoid this its just a filler with a cool name

if the first ingredient is "fresh chicken"  the second is rice, you can bet that in actuality the feed has much more rice then chicken. because the rice is weighed dry and the chicken is 80% water

if the first ingredient is "chicken meal" and the second is rice, then the odds are that you are getting a feed with more chicken product then rice......

The problem with diamond pet foods is they have been involved in every major recall and some just for them.  They have killed hundreds if not thousands of dog's with their food.  They are now involved in the Canidae lawsuit as they now manufacture Canidae.

TOTW has been a runaway best seller for them.  But the question is how long will they keep up the quality level while maintaining a very attractive price. They have been known to cut corners in quality in the past.  My experience is not to trust diamond pet foods.

Therefore like snapier69 I feed Orijen 6 fish and Vets Choice.  I sleep well at night knowing I'm feeding my dogs a safe food and not worring about diamonds quality control procedures.

I don't think the Diamond recall involved anywhere near "hundred if not thousands of dogs killed" - not by far.  Still, even one sick dog due to toxin in a food is a problem.  They dealt with the problem, and I'm sure the same problem won't happen again, and I'm also sure it hasn't happened/will happen at some point to any other dog food manufacturer.  Quality control, that's the ticket.  One shipment of corn not checked carefully enough (one person was to blame) and this was enough to cause one batch of dog food (hundreds of bags) to be tainted and the problem caused.

I've fed Chicken Soup (also manufactured by Diamond) for many years now with zero problems.  It also was not involved in the recall or problems with Diamond manufacturing as it does not contain corn.
