Hi to everyone , could someone out there give me some help in understanding the protein requirements of a german shepherd when using the popular complete foods on the market today. For example does extra protein in complete food increase weight and energy levels for dogs and puppies . Equally does feeding a reduced protein level complete food mean a dog or puppy may lose some weight but possibly become listless or lethargic . I understand different dogs need different requirements during their life and a excercise levels play a part but in general what is the rule of thumb regarding protein content for the age groups from puppy to adulthood .

THere is no minimum or maximum protein level for dogs; there are so many considerations; not all protein is the same.

First of all I could make a food out of leather which would be 100% protein but it would be non bio available to the dog and therefore worthless.

Incomplete protein does not supply the essential amino acids for dogs.
Commercial foods interfere with amino acids and some therefore have to be added.
Some proteins are actively discouraged such as soya which is a thyroid inhibitor.
