Yes Moons the jug is a distraction, noise and the dog can be hit with it, they can be throw at the dog as they charge and we leave them on the field to do OB around and sometimes we kick them. I have my dog retrieve them sometimes or use it as my reward when I'm stupid and forget my tug or ball at home. My daughter has figured out I always have a ball or tug in my car now and she helps herslef instead of looking for her own, when she works her dog. 
I have come to training 2 weeks in a row with no reward/toy for my dog. Good thing he isn't particular, he'll do OB for a rock, coke can or whatever I have in my hand.
