pics aren't very clear.  and it isn't always the best time to x-ray around a dogs heat as the joints tend to be really lose.

but JMO the sockets don't have enough coverage over the ball of the hip.   especially dogs right side.  I would x-rays about a month or 2 after her heat, but at the moment I don't think they would pass. if they did it would be barely.

I would do them at 1 yr and see.  Heat cycle does effect them.  These dont look to good.  Sorry.

the right socket is too shallow.  Overall they don't look too hot.  I certainly would not x-ray just prior to or following a heat cycle, but I still don't think these hips will pass.

I agree with the posters above, and would wait some time before making a final determination. The bitch's left side pelvic socket is the one that concerns me, as it it appears to have just a bit less than 50% coverage. But, the postioning is not perfect and as you say, she is very near her heat cycle.

I presume that you live stateside, so if you goal is to submit her radiographs to the S.V., I suggest that you make a duplicate radiograph when she is just past one (1) year of age and ask O.F.A. to evaluate one (1) film as a preliminary radiograph, obtain the results, and if she passes O.F.A. you can send the other radiograph to the S.V.. The S.V.'s opinion tends to be final except in extraordinary circumstances, so I would not take the risk.

But I do not see serious defects, and I see no evidence of thickening. These hips may pass O.F.A. at the age of two (2) years but I would be mindful of the shallow socket in regards to her upbringing. Who knows? With proper positioning and tight joints she may easily pass as O.F.A. "Fair" and that grade is nothing to cause shame.

Good Luck!

Do the hips develope much from 8 months to 2 years, as far as depth of socket?

I already supplement with E and Glucosimine Condroiten - (please over look that spelling), us there anything else that could help? Would adding a calcium to her diet help to increase bone, or would it make a difference?

Thank you so much for the comments.

What made you want to take the shots so early?Did you see something in her movement that was bothering you?Just curious..

NO she moves fine. She runs and jumps at will with out any type of gait change.

I have a 10 year old Aussi rescue that has HD. She started running funny at about 28 months old. I had X-rays and discovered that she had HD. At the time, my vet told me that if its detected early enough a procedure (TCO) can be done that will fix it and the dog will be able to live its life pain free. The TCO has to be done before a dog is 10 months or its too late.........I didn't find out soon enough for my Aussie. I wanted to make sure that my GSD puppy was OK early enough to have that option if necessary.

I had the X-rays done for my sake, not becasue I felt that there is a problem wiht my puppy.

what is tco? No the exrays dont look good enough to pass...no calcium at all that is a no no...calcium forms deposits in joints and in the kidneys....raw meats,,cottage cheese, yogurts, greens , green beans , and bones from raw meats.. Why are you giving glucosamine Ch..now?? My vet laughed one day when a vet told one of my pups customer at 4 mons old..you dog has bad hips see how he sits,,and his ears are not up all the way...you need glucosmine ch...60.00 bottle of pills is gonna change that at 4 mos old....hogwash .... my vet , said send her my way , if she is that easy to sell a bottle of pills to , I will stock her up.. and then tell her how to achieve the goal of ears and sitting sideways on his hips..it is called walk the dog forward and correct his sit....that should be dont when the pup comes home...if your dog sits lazy ,,correct it. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr Never do exrays near heat cycles of females..wait till they are well past the first one..

TCO the procedure where they cut the hips in 3 places and re-orientate the hip socket for a better joint. And a after recovery a pain free life....

No I will not put this puppy through such a painful procedure.

Raw chicken makes this dog puke (even small pieces) and have the runs all over the carpet, I've tried 3 times now to switch her over.

Glucosamine helps my old Aussie, and it helps my knees.......it doens't hurt the dog..........so why not?
