Maybe they saw somewhere where another breeder was offering non-breeding quality/non-show quality dogs at a discount and thought they'd ask as well? I would never ask a breeder/owner if they were "firm on the price" unless I found something at fault with the dog - physical or behaviorial.

A breeder would.....if they were a reputable and honest breeder. I was mainly speaking about trainers or owners of the dogs....not necessarily the breeder. I have seen at least two high- dollar "reputable" breeders trying to sell off a dog with a fault for full price. (Dog of which I am speaking was a cryptorchid, and the breeder was selling him as an "intense drive, great stud" dog.)

for me, maybe I'm a screwy person, where the puppy/dog goes is way more important than money. for example out of the litters I have bred, only two, the first litter I gave two of the puppies away for free to club members that worked very hard with their previous dogs. One of those dogs that I gave away for free this past year recieved his sch3 with a score of 273. The other dog is a wonderful house dog on a farm. The second litter I sold for half price to anyone who worked their dogs.
If I found the perfect home for a puppy and the people needed a cut in price, then I will and have done it. maybe these people are not so screwy, maybe it's you.

And that would be why I put reputable in quotation marks.
