Ontario banned the pit bull a number of years ago. We all knew what was going to happen, didn't we?   This is from Toronto Sun coloumnist, John Wade.

A while back the province I live in decided to make pit bulls illegal. I wondered at the time, "What do they think is going to happen? Do they think the young boys/men looking for courage on a leash are going to go out and buy hamsters? No, they'll find some other breed to ruin." Pit bulls actually used to be a pretty good breed in the right hands. Believe it or not they were stable. (Some still are.) Then they attracted breeders with all the ethics of the American sub-prime mortgage industry.

The Argentine Dogo is one of the breeds irresponsible breeders and dog owners are going to wreck next. In an amateur's hands this breed could easily become a gun with a brain. Selling this dog to someone who isn't even likely paying his own rent yet is, in my opinion, negligent.

[sigh] As TwoMoons would say, SSDD!  And, as the columnist says, I hope this poor lady gets the situation under control before she winds up in hospital. 16 months is exactly the age most male dogs start to challenge for pack leadership.

Not surprised. Most of the molosser breeds creating for property protection have this kind of personality. I agree with the colmnist, whoever sold a 19 year old kid this dog should be barred from their registering organization, if you ask me.

in lancaster, california, the mayor is trying to ban pits and rotties because they are the preferred dogs of gangs. one resident, who is a trainer and dog show competitor asked "what happens when these gang members that you're trying to target move on to dobermans or german shepherds? you going to restrict them too?". the mayor responded with "if they move on to cats, i'm going to take their cats". people are frustrated and willing to throw out the baby with the bath water. and many (maybe most) areas don't have the necessary animal control personnel to deal with strays or vicious dogs, so they remain a threat. it's great if you can enact strict laws with fines, but if you can't enforce them, what's the point?
this article was in the Los Angeles Times this a.m. in the California section. it also would require the spaying and neutering of all varities of pits and rotts, including mutts that have "predominant physical characteristics" of those breeds.

I hate it when dogs are blamed for the stupidity of their owners. What ever happened to making the individual responsible for his/her own behavior? I say lets make tougher laws to punish the idiots who need "courage on a leash" and protect the rights of responsible owners.  Let's also ban journalists and news reporters from sensationalizing and over dramatizing dog related events (speaking of DOGS 101 on Animal Planet which emphasized German Shepherds are the "#1 dog for dog bites in this country", last I knew it was the smaller breeds with more bites). Sorry, I digress.
