Which is better? Male or female for Police K-9 service work?

Males seem to be visually prefered, esp. by male K9 handlers *lol* but I've had occasion to compare male and female police and military K9s, and I have to say I haven't noticed a difference in how they work. I'd say it really is a case-by-case basis.

If it would be dog for me, I would prefer good female. What female laks in size makes up in heart. I happen to have a nice female that can match up to most of males out there. Female always fights for you while male fights for himself :) (at least that is my opinion).

Each dog is different. I have two males and one female and my little 65lbs cute, sweet, adorable female is a bitch on wheels when in protection mode, woowee. My big 100lb male is gentle as a lamb until protection time comes around, then he too is hell on wheels. My male looks much more imposing than my little girl, but both do what needs to be done. It all depends on personal preference.

I have known several K-9 dogs and all were intact males. I think the more imposing size of the male is preferred. No question that females can be just as good or better than the males, but really, if a dog were sent to get you I think you'd be more inclined to drop and curl into a ball seeing a 90 pound male charging at you than a 65 pound female.
