I came across this dog in the database and was surprised to see a show rating being that it is a coated dog.  I thought a coat such as this would be considered a disqualifying fault.  (I do not know the dog - I actually think it's quite a nice dog in appearance.)

I have a similarly coated bitch that I would love to get a show rating on -- but I was under the impression that it was necessary to wait until if and/or when the long-stock coats were written back into the standard.

Am I misunderstanding something with regard to showing a long-stock presently?

Thank you,
Katie

He is a beautiful dog.

He isnt really that coated. I have seen showline dogs with that much hair which were doing very well in the showring. On a few of them you actual had to put your hand beneath the belly to see if it was male or female!

Anyways, here is the link to the show (or one show) where he placed. Look at the sieger!

More and more coated dogs or long hairs if you prefer are getting show ratings.

Here is another "coated" dog with a show rating.

He is beautiful, he is more plush, coated has the ear feathers/tuffs and more feathering on the legs as well, he is one I would so love to own

the other link is not a coat either, if so then 95 % of the dogs i see on here would be coats he has less coat then the solid black one, I own a coat and he has twice as much coat and undercoat than if you put those two dogs together

The link that Elkoor provided is the homepage of one of the two breed organizations in Germany for long stockcoat GSDs. When you look at the pedigrees, you will see that most, if not all of them are bred by SV breeders (note the SZ registration nos.). Neither one of these two clubs are currently FCI-recognized, though. It will be interesting to see if they can get that recognization once the SV has changed the breed standard and the long stockcoat is once again integrated for breeding and showing, as a variety, decided by the SV General Membership Assembly last year in May . Or maybe, these two clubs will disappear into oblivion? They used to just be an alternative for longcoat fanciers, who were not able to show their dogs under SV and/or FCI sanctioned events, but this all will change now. These clubs might not have a function anymore and some people in Germany have wondered about that already.

There is a Long Coat Club in Germany and they put the Sg and the V ratings on the long coat dogs..It is not done by the SV and not recognized by them..GOT INTO THAT  WITH THE DOG tAMMIE JO BOUGHT.   TOOK A MONTH TO GET THE HIPS AND THE SG ON THE DOGS NAME INTO PLAY TO UNDERSTAND WHERE IT CAME FROM..

HARD TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.> bUT HE WAS A LONG COAT WITH  an  SG in front of his name on the database., not recognized by the SV.

Katie, well first of all you might want to verify that the dog really is "V" rated. Sorry to sound like a "doubting Thomas" but this IS a non-regulated public database and anyone can post anything about any dog. I could post that my own dog is V rated, SchH titled and breed surveyed. Nobody to stop me unless they call me out and ask for proof. -Yvette

You would really have to question why long coats were rejected for showing in the first place???. If long coats are considered contrary to the breed standard, where did the long coat gene come from???. It's really only a variation in coat appearance not unlike a variation in colour and texture.

It wouldn't surprise me to think that perhaps long coats were rejected for showing from a political standpoint given that they had an advantage in sheer beauty and attractiveness to the eye from their luscious coat and win too many shows from that basis???. In other words, if long coats have a potential to dominate in the show ring with sheer beauty, "disqualify them" and eliminate the problem???.

I know in Australia, long coats are used regularly in breeding programs to produce the "plush coat" as they call it which rate higher in the show ring than a standard/short coat. The grandmother of our boy, a long coat bitch was used extensively in breeding programs and produced many plush coat offspring that rated exceptionally well in the show ring.
