Does anyone change the food they feed when a dog reaches what some may consider a senior (8 years)?
While there are no apparent problems with the dog and he is doing super do you just leave him alone or should we be proactive?

Will say he has a super high metabolism he gets 2.5 scoops Royal Canin everyday and then marrow bones on the weekend.
Also give him NuVet, Omega 3, flax seed oil and a blue green algae supplement as he is still used for breeding.
And he is lean…but solid 85 pounds.

Thanks for feedback…just curious what other people do with their GSDS when they reach a certain age.

No, no change needed, go by your sight if she look good leve it, if she getting fat, cut it down, if too skinny increase, puppy, young adlot, senior type of food is nothing but a marketing plot. As long as you feeding RC you don't need to adjust should be good for all stages of life.

Buddy will be 12 on the 12th of May, Josh will be 8 on the 14th February.  They are fed one meal per day (I used to feed twice, it didn't agree) and both look pretty good on it,

mine all eat the same......and they are 4, 7, and 12.  They all just eat different amounts and the older one gets some cosequin.

They do make senior diets, which may or may not be a gimick to some.   for me, it's just easier to feed them all the same.  The older one certainly eats less than the younger ones.  Though she would like to eat more, as she LOVES food.   I just like to keep her weight down, as it definitely helps as they get older and arthritis kicks in.  :)

Thanks that is what I was thinking.
I really dont want to add another bin to the line up we have already.
If its working just leave it....
Keep it simple....
Oddly our 8 year old gets the most food the - 2 yr old and 18 month olds get fat fast.
Guess its all about their metabolism and genetics...like me I hardly eat a thing and put on the pounds :)

that's funny......the younger ones can eat just about all that they want without gaining anything. in fact, almost tough to keep the weight on them. but, they are both pretty active in training and what not, so they burn it.

My last older dog stayed on the same diet but less of it.
And I was bad about giving her leftovers.   The good stuff...LOL
Hey at that age they deserve a little indulgence.

I feed raw, so no change except perhaps less bone as they get older.

My last "OLD" dog ate the same kibble as the younger ones. She lived to be 17yo. (She was not a GSD, she was an Australian Cattle Dog.) My 10yo GSD and 9yo cattle dog mix eat the same All Life Sages kibble as my 9 month old pup. (They just eat less of it.)
