Wellness Super 5 Large breed puppy - Page 1

Just wanted to share my experience with this food. Ingredients look pretty good, I've always liked Wellness (I have 2 old cats, 11 and 18, that look fantastic on it), but a puppy I was raising on it had farly poor stool on it. Formed at best, puddles at worst.  I was about to have a stool sample done when I ran out one weekend.  I looked at the ingredients (main meat base is chicken and whitefish) and gave her my oldest bitch's Fromm whitefish for 2 days. I expected her to have an upset tummy, exactly the opposite, it firmed her stool right up.  Switched her completely to Fromm and now she's doing great. I have to say stool volume on all my dogs is very low on the Fromm whitefish.

My boss was raising his doberman puppy on Evo and was disappointed with her stool and weight loss. We were discussing these super premium foods and the prospect that while we are trying to give our dogs the nutrition they need, are some of these foods just too rich for some dogs?

And on a side note- I have 2 of our 5 dogs on Source Plus micronutrient supplement (figured I'd test and compare dogs) and they look AWESOME. I'll be putting the others on it as soon as I order more, you can get it from SmartPack. It did take about 2 months of giving it to my 7 year old to see a difference.

I have raised 3 LARGE litters now on the Wellness Large Breed Puppy Food. The one thing I did like about it was the consistent firm stools...if anything they were too firm, so I didn't have to worry about the effects of any treats I often give the pups..or if they find the bag of treats and ransack it. :)

I don't like the Wellness adult foods mainly due to the large volume of gas and stool it seemed to cause...but I have had excellent results with the puppy food.

AND!!!! My local Wellness rep is great about sending me fantastic puppy packets complete with several samples of food and treats for all the puppy owners, and tons of coupons, along with these neat little health passport books than really are much much nicer than the usual cheap papers tri-fold ones you find.

I am testing different foods (AGAIN) trying to find a reasonably priced answer for at least some of my dogs. I didn't have good luck on Wellness. Soft to runny stools. EVO has way too much protein for a GSD puppy. I use it short-term for dogs having trouble maintaining weight (recovering or highly stressed, not eating well) Too bad not every dog does well on any food. Sure would make life easier if they did! I wish EaglePack Holistic was less $. My pups do very well on that. (Lg breed puppy) Haven't tried the adult versions yet. Funny- most of my working line dogs do pretty well on almost anything, (except Canidae ALS) while my show dogs get the squirts every time I switch no matter how gradually I do it. I've never had a picky wkg dog. Put food down, stand back, a minute later its GONE. SS

i have fed wellnes is the past and agree about the gas thing.  the stool was never a problem.  of course it met whole dog journal's list of approved foods with all of there criteria.  it gets pricey to feed it, especially feeding multiple dogs.  if you can afford it, it is a great food, high end for sure.  not to promote another brand, but after reading prior posts, i have switched to costco's chicken and rice.  no corn, grain free etc.  it is made by diamond though.  not everyones favorite company.  40lbs for 21.99, healthy stools and coats, no complaints.  hope you get a computer ss.

The kirkland food is pretty good and was rated as the best bang for your buck by the whole dog jurnal. The meat content is good and the grains they use are whole.

Weve been using it for over 15yrs now (along with meats) and the kennel dogs have done great on it.

I have tried eagel pack and did not like the results of their coats. Kirkland seemed better.

I have tried wellness but it just seems too rich. loose stools, gas, dogs refusing to eat it.

I have had great luck with evo but its just too expensive to use right now....:(

I wish we had a Cosco near here. I know an awful lot of "big time" breeders/competitors who swear by the Kirkland stuff. I hate to say this, but the very best multiple dog, long term success I ever have/ have had was with Euk Premium Performance (original recipe). I think the Kirkland chicken formula is very similar in recipe. Yes? I wonder where the nearest Cosco to me is. (18235 zip code) NJ maybe? MD? When I get a computer I'll look it up :-) SS
