It helps to balance the good bacteria in the gut and aids in good digestion and absorption. It is rather inexpensive to use. The is a product made by Conklin called Fastrack Liquid Dispersible, this comes in a one pound container and you only need to use a small scoop once or twice a week. I have used it for the past 11 years and swear by it. I increase it if my dogs get sick and have to go onto an antibiotic then I use the Conklin Canine gel prior to each dose of antibiotic to protect the flora in the gut.

Hope this helps

agree with beardog,, use yogurt, make sure it has acidophilus in it,, it will say so on the container.

It's excellent for maintaining  the healthy flora in the digestive tract, and is a must if you have been using antibiotics, as they kill off much of the good stuff along with the bad. I use the same product for my dogs as I use for myself, Nature's Way Primadophilus - just open a few capsules and empty the powder over their food. I don't do it every day (unless they are on meds), but  perhaps once or twice a week...... you can buy it at Whole Foods or Vitamin Cottage (or any health store.) It's important to keep the capsules refrigerated.............

I use Enzymatic Therapies Acidophilus Pearls.  It is a teensy little ruond gel cap so no refrigeration.

Thank you all for the information!  Yogurt, huh.  I’ll have to try that myself.

Just out of interest what can happen if the bacteria in the digestive tract get out of balance?  Does is simply impede the dog’s (or person’s) ability to absorb food?

being out of balance frequently results in diarrhea and that certainly has an effect on absorbtion.

Just a note about yogurt - I give it to my dogs also(though not every day) but you will need a LOTof it to equal the benefit of the live bacteria in the capsules. more than you would probably want to feed. It's a good thing to add to their food, but to get the most benefit you need the caps......

Bear in mind that if you giving probiotics you should a) not resttrict yourself to ones that contain only one bacteria and b) to maximise their benefit give them wtih prebiotics such as a banana ........
