Okay, I know this is a weird question, but my curiousity has gotten the better of me....
I was talking to a friend the other night, and she told me a mutal friend had had her female replaced by the breeder because it was a hermaphrodite. I googled this, and found (no surprise!) it's most often due to a problem with the sex chromosomes (X and Y). It can also happen due to the fetus being exposed to an excess of hormones in the womb.
Now, I have a friend on another forum who says her rat terrier is in heat, and their older rat terrier (also female, but spayed) is trying to mount her. She said this bitch has always appeared rather gender-ambiguous, and frequently ilfts her leg to pee. She also has no visible nipples.
Is it possible she could be a hermaphrodite? She came from a shelter, so her history is unknown.
(Gets out the popcorn, and waits to see just how long it will take this question to veer off topic...)

I think the 3 legged peeing thing is quite common in terriers lol... no idea why, but a friend that bred PJR & Westies, says almost all of hers used to do it. Too close to the ground? Splashback thing? LOL

Could be she's just a little bitch.I don't think she gives a rats ass as to the splash back.LOL.She certainly don't care about the back lash.

That XXY puppy might have been a very good Schutzhund or PPD prospect. No spaying needed and no heat and no impregnating other full females.
There was another thread talking about large litters that had only one female. The discussion centered around whether that lone female would be fertile. So, that would be a fully female genetically and chromosomally (XX) but would have been over exposed to testosterone. She would then be too much of a doggy bitch to ever get pregnant.
It is interesting and I would love to here more.
Calling out to Daryl Ehret, Molly Eichenluft., Sunsilver, Yellow Rose and others who have something to share on this

Many female dogs will mount other dogs, male or female, it's a display nothing sexual about it and nothing abnormal either. The peeing has already been discussed. My daughters female will piss up a tree, if that's where the last dog wizzed. She's a territorial BITCH is all.

The condition does occur now and again.. many years ago I groomed a long coat GSD who was hermaphrodite.. it is believed there are often other problems as well as the obvious
In the case of the spayed rat terrier who lifts her leg... I'm sure the condition would have been identified at teh time of the spay surgery .. somebody would have noticed something at some point that wasn't quite what they expected to see.
Many many many females lift their legs and mark......
The condition occurs in other species as well.. watch enough A&E or TLC and you will come across a show... my mom had a distant cousin born hermaphrodite.. the calls went like... "It's a girl" then "No, It's a boy"
I'm sure some of the geneticists in the group can give the technical rendition

Dominant bitches do that...if you see a bitch lifting her leg to pee, you've got a girl who wants to be the man of the house. Veronica

So, have any of you ever had a bitch without nipples?
I just checked my male GSD tonight, back where the fur is thin on his belly, and even HE has very small nipples!
