Today i was walking in my street till my neighbour's pitbul got loose and started running after me. I was about a 100 yards away from my home. Luckily my female saw me and also saw the pitbull that was running after me. She jumped over the fence and charged towards the pit. Soon ,a fierce dog fight started in the middle of the street. After fighting the pit ran away as he was badly injured. My female, though not as badly hurt as the pitbul has a deep gash in her face.

It all happened at night and the the vet is closed, what should i do? I cleaned the wound with pyodine and applied an anti septic cream called Savlon. What can i do to make sure it doesnt get infected?

No emergency vet near you?  Isnt one open now?

If your dog has puncture wounds she should be put on antibiotics.  I always keep some on hand in case of puncture wounds.  Also you can clean wound with peroxide and use a triple antibiotic.  Ask your vet to give you at least one extra dose of something like amoxicillin (sp?) so you will have it for things like weekends and nights, etc.

You can do nothing about a deep gash unless you want to try to stitch it yourself.  Most can't handle that much on their own, seeing a vet would be best.   Infection can be minimized with a little anti-septic but again the vet can give anti-biotics.

Best to just keep it clean until you can see a vet.

You and your neighbor have much to talk about.

He is in India if I remember right, they might have no emergency vets, in my home country was same thing. Lukcy for me vet was family friend so I always could get in touch with him.

AristianM don't worry she will be ok, just clean the wound, and if it's not bleeding intensively she will be fine till morning. Dog's are tough animals.

BTW same thing happened to me and my friend when we were a kids and SL long coat was first to the rescue, even the wall that was build to contain him didn't stop him, over 6" he still run to our rescue, he killed the other dog though. It's surprising what some dog's can do when protecting it's owner. And we talking about a dog that most of his life was the neighborhood kids miniature horse, that would let kids ride on his back :)

Just an FYI.. PEROXIDE IS NOT A DISINFECTANT!  It should never be used on deep wounds.  Peroxide can actually cause WORSE INFECTION by moving bacteria around when it fizzes and it can also cause tissue damage.  Basically it is good for cleaning up blood and inducing vomitting.

Dilluted Betadine, Novalsan Solution or if you dont have either of those... dilute antibacterial soap and warm water.

(p.s... I'm not talking out of my ass I work for a vet - and I am always hearing people say to clean wounds with peroxide... they dont even recommend that for people).

She is doing fine. She has a scratch near her eyelid, a scratch on the muzzle and a deep puncture wound on the cheek. I washed the wounds with a anti bacterial wash and applied an anti septic cream. Snajper I live in pakistan and there is an emergency vet but, hes on holiday. TM, i wud have posted pictures but its 1am and theres been a blackout. Luckily my phone has internet.
