Hello, Hopefully this spring I will be getting my first pup for Schutzhund training. I am very new to this and looking for a place to start. I live in Lexington Ky so it would be nice to find a group in the area to gather info from and train with. I'm also having difficulty locating a breeder i feel like i can trust to get a quality and healthy pup. Any Ideas?? All help would be greatly appreciated. I look forward hearing from you.   Thanks again.

You have come to the right place.   You seemed to have run into the major problem when buying a pup finding a breeder you can trust and work with.  It has taken me many months to find a breeder I can trust.  Don't comprmise your principles and follow your instincts.

Check the Kennels and Breeder listings on this site.  Also look at the puppy section. Put a free ad on the request to buy section of this site.   There are a lot of breeders where you live but I wouldn't set my heart on a local pup. Get the best pup possible  for you that is the key.  If you have questions about a breeder put a post on this forum.

Lastly check and recheck references also get the breeders vet reference.

Best of luck to you do your homework and be patient it will pay off in the end.

Try Jeff Lund and Pat Kennedy of Schneiden Fels German Shepherds in Woodburn, KY (near Bowling Green).  They have a couple of nice working puppies out of a proven combination right now.  They are wonderful and trustworthy people who sell good pups at excellent prices.  Mail them at schneidenfels@bellsouth.net and their website is www.schneidenfels.com and ask about the G litter.  They also have conformation puppies if that is your interest.  Good luck, Barb Eichman, M.D.

Good luck take your time, I don't know of any breeders in your are that I can recomend but I am sure some other poster will be able to help you. If you don't mind getting your dog from NY area, and you are looking for a breeder that stands 100% behind his dogs, as well one that will be always there to help you and advice no matter where you choose to go, you might want to contact Steve Simpkins at www.haussimpkins.com, Good luck.

Larrydee, gave you some good advice already that you should follow by. Also make sure you SEE and SIGN an actual guarantee contract and get a copy for your personal use.  See if it states in their contract if they will do a puppy replacement if your pup ends up with HD/ED. Just dot yout "I's" and cross your "T's" when looking for that special pup that will fit your lifestyle.

hey there!  i live in the Lexington area myself!!  I can definitely reccomend Drachefeld kennels.  Karat's Ulko is the stud there & he is amazing.  Here is their website to contact them:  www.drachefeld.com   Charlie Starr is the manager there.  We have a pup right now out of Ulko (we own the mother).  She is 6 weeks old & we are hoping to do Schutzhund with her (we've never done it before either, so this will be all new to us).  I think Drachefeld does have some litters right now, but don't know if they are already taken.  If there are pups availble, you would be very lucky to get one, as they only breed quality, in my opinion!!  Would be worth looking into.  AND, they do schutzhund training there too!!  They used to train on Saturday mornings - haven't checked recently to see if that is when they are still doing this same time.  They have a big training field & Charlie has even hosted a couple shows at the KY Horse Park in the past year.

Please keep in touch with me!  As I said, we are also hoping to get into it this year with our pup and it is great to find someone else in the area!!!  By the way, Drachefeld kennels is located in Winchester.  We are from Richmond.

Drachefeld is primarily a SHOW line shepherd kennel and a very good one at that.  If you are looking for a working line pup this is not the place to go.  Try Schneiden Fels who right now have two male pups and a female out of two working line SchH3 parents.  Barb

If you are also looking outside of KY visit www.kulladogs  Excellent, excellent breeders and they work and title all their dogs and foloow the SV rules required for breeding. I myself have an excellent young male from them. They have an exceptional litter due Feb 09. Definately worth the drive. Both parents located on their property.

A person could go to the papper and get a German Shepherd for $3oo. but you get what you pay for most of the time. You  will have vet bills, dog food bills ,training costs ,time invested , This dog could live 13-14 years,so you just might want to get the very best . For Schutzhund and strong working dogs go www.tiekerhook.com  The odds are better. some are just trying to sell pups.
