I have a Red and Black female who is 3 years old. Last winter her nose (not the top part, but the face of it with the nostrils) started to slowly change pigment...for a while it was a brownish rust color and then more of a pink. The vet said no big deal, nothing was wrong. OK...I guess I was going to live with that, although I wished her nice black nose was back. In the Spring her nose turned back to total black!! Now it is winter and she is having another morphing into pink on her nose!
My friend has a Red and Black in Oregon and she says it happens to her male each winter.
Does anyone else have this phenomena? Why does it happen? Is there anything to keep it from happening, as in supplements?

its called winter nose and its a sunlight deficiency (vit D) you can get a supplement

I have heard plastic food/water bowls can cause this also. But in your dogs case being it is just in winter, yup winter nose.

Well, but do you use the same bowls for food and water in the winter, or do you switch to plastic in the winter, as some do? If so, it could simply be the plastic, and NOT Vit D deficiency.
Be very, very careful with any Vit D supplements. In fact, get your vet to run some blood tests, first. I would be more worried about Vit D toxicity than a pink nose in the winter.

A couple of mine do this every year and it soon goes. I never use anything to try and get rid of it.

Thanks everybody. I did use some Vit D last year, but was afraid of it because I'd heard of the toxicity. So just lived with the pink and was glad to see it go back to black. I always use Stainless bowls all year round, so the plastic is out of the picture. I did a general blood panel on her. Should I test for something specific?

I don't think you can doanything about it, nothing to test for. Its just the way she is... maybe if she is kept outside alot where it is cold bringing her in to a warmer spot might help. I haven't had to deal with it yet so not sure. My girl got a spot on her nose that turned pink so I thought it was going to happen this winter. But I noticed it was kinda raised up, I called it a wart,LOL! I had an appointment to bring her in to the vet to check it but before I went it just went away... so not sure if anything but being warmer will help...I thought it had to do with the cold vs sunlight...
