Does anyone know of the frequency of Corneal Dermoid in GSD and if it is a genetic defect that can be tested for or traced through lines?
thank you

Anyone? extra growth of skin over part of the eye, maybe a little hair in it. What!?

Hello, dermoids, i'm told, are very very rare and not a considered a genetic defect. Must be removed only by a canine opthomologist. I studied up on it when I discovered a pup with one. The dog doesn't realize it's there....doesn't bother them. It's recommended that they be removed to avoid having the hair pulled by someone that doesn't know what it is......
where are you located?

I am located in Pennsylvania. It was discovered on a puppy I just sold but was not picked up by my vet. She was the last puppy born and the smallest. I will be paying the new owner back for the cost to correct the defect.

I've only seen it in Norwegian Buhunds.

Shire, it's a very expensive treatment. Estimated at $1,200 to be removed. But, I'm surprized that your vet "missed" it.
It must be a very small one.
