I was recently told that my male Gauda was a "patterned sable". I do not ever remember being told this or know what that means. Need some feedback. Here are several pics of Gauda. His sister is Dressa .
I took the pics so all could see various sides , head and undercoat of this dog..
This is Dressa, his sister.

Both of them are totally a sable..But the person said that He , Gauda, is a patterned sable...??????
There is no doubt about either one being sable.. She is grey
GAUDA IS RED. NOW WHAT DOES A PATTERNED SABLE mean.?

Patterned sables look like they have "points" (legs, ears, etc.) and the black on the back tends to be a "blanket" form, rather than a saddle, but still discernable as a pattern of coloring differing from the legs. I think that if you check Linda Shaw's website, she may have examples of them and a comparison with a non-pattenred sable. (?)

Both of these pups were grey sable as pups, clearly with no markings but the black markings on tail and on mask. Couldnt find the baby pics in my albums.

right - they are sable dogs with the "patterns" or markings of a black/tan or black/red saddle-back dog. My Aika is a patterned sable - her mother was black/red show-line, sire red sable working line. Look at her from the front and you might think she is black/red. But she's a sable - patterned like a black/red.

Cool thread, & just what I waas thinking about, having received some pictures of my pups that left home at 8 weeks, that I haven't seen since. There were 4 'black & tan' puppies in the litter, they looked black at birth. 2 of them are turning brown, facial markings showing, & if you part the hairs on their heads, they are reddish brown underneath! There are solid black hairs on them where the 'saddle' would be; the other 2 pups have all black hairs with red-brown legs, vents, & facial markings. I started a thread a while back, asking if my female pup was blck & tan, or sable. I'm still not sure. I'm not going to even try to post pictures after the trouble I had this morning, but I will try to take new pix this weekend & post them. The bicolor female we have looks, well, bicolor; until you start parting her hair. So, what is she? jackie harris
