We got pelted with over a foot of snow and ice in the Pacific Northwest this week, and my little black and tan has shown her true colors; she may look like a well bred GSD, but when the snow flies, the Malamute/Wolf part of her has taken over. She does not want to be indoors, and cannot understand why we do not want to stay outside with her and play. Nicole has most of the instincts of a GSD (ball drive, loyalty, protectivity, intelligence), but is really a "dog of the north" with a GSD coat. The breeders of King Shepherd dogs need to come up with a more appropriate name for the breed, as they are not suited for climates where a true Shepherd would be at home; they are SNOW DOGS, bred to live in extreme northern climates, where ice and snow are the norm.

Geez, I had better contact my breeder. They told me that I was buying a purebred GSD. His papers and pedegree state that he is a "true" Shepherd. Despite owning a number of GSDs over the years, I'm still clearly a rookie and was ripped off.

My boy too loves the snow and can't understand why I do not want to stay out and play longer. Obviously he must have Malamute/Wolf in his line because it appears that true shepherds are NOT snow dogs. I can only imagine the outrage of the rest of the members of this board when they learn that their snow-loving GSDs are now suspect.

Good Grief Charlie Brown....or to take from Two Moons...SSDD

LOL.... Tell this 6 month old Full Blooded GSD that he hates snow. Tell that grandmother of 7 that she hates it too. LOL

About 2 1/2 feet and it was 22*F, yesterday.

22 is sunbathing weather, I was out in -7F without windchill this morning playing with mine.  I know I wasn't liking it a whole lot, but i'm pretty sure they were.  I better tell them they're not supposed to.  Oh yeah, I put one in a harness to pull a sled too

I grew up with a purebred GSD as the family animal, and he loved Michigan winter weather (chasing snowballs), but he was not adapted to living outdoors 24/7/365; canines with the dense undercoat and webbed feet common to Alaskan Grey Wolves are bred for forty below (as long as there is a snowbank to dig into), and can stay above snow depths that most domestic dogs cannot. Our little Nicole is more well suited to winter weather than the AKC Siberian Huskies that my sister used to breed; bigger paw spread, denser undercoat, and more ability to bound through a hardened snow pack. This breed is perfect for usage as a mountain rescue canine; her ability to smell objects buried under compacted snow and ice is unbelieveable!
