PLEASE CROSSPOST
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two dogs disappeared from Dogs for Autism on Friday night, December 19th, in
the Croswell/Georgetown district, Easley, South Carolina. WE ARE
FRANTIC!!!!!
"Jethro" is a solid black male German Shepherd, intact, 85lbs. HomeAgain
Microchip number 491C2B097C.
"Visa" is a black and white spotted, short-haired female, spayed, 45lbs.
Both dogs are extremely gentle and friendly. They are an important part of
the Dogs for Autism service dog program and a substantial reward will be
offered for their recovery.

I just received this update:

Sadly, we found Visa last night, killed on the road. That is distressing us
terribly. But for the whiplash effect, here's this morning's scoop.....
We found Jethro this morning. He is scuffed up and hungry, but safe. Our
greatest thanks to the news crews of FoxCarolina and WSPA for their
broadcasts, which resulted in a number of tips about "sightings," and let us
know where to look. One of our other dogs helped search and provided an
appropriate alert that helped us spot him. WPSA has his photo and an short
update on their website:

Both channels are about to get something incredibly nice for their staff
for Christmas. I don't know what yet, but we'll figure something out!!!!
We still don't know how the dogs got out, and we're terribly sad about the
loss of Visa. But having Jethro back is a huge piece of the future success
of the DFA program. New security measures (translation: tough and
comprehensive locks) will be taking up residence shortly.
Thanks to those who have emailed me with suggestions for searching.

I am so sorry Visa was lost, but thank God Jethro is home safe and sound. Amazing how a community can pull together at times like that. God bless and Merry Christmas.

So sorry for the loss of Visa.I hope to God that she did not suffer. This takes away an oppurtunity for someone that would of enriched there life with this young dog.I hope all works out for your program and thanks for dedicating your time to a very worthwhile program. All the best for the holiday season in this very heartbreaking time.

I'm so sorry to hear about Visa's death...one can only hope that it was quick and that she suffered very little. That is indeed great news that Jethro was found alive! The silver lining in this dark cloud...
For a gift to the news channel, how about a plaque with their pictures on it, with big thank you on a brass plate, or something like that? Along with a basket of goodies or something.

Hello to the group - it took me a bit to get registered here so I could reply. Thank you for your kind comments regarding our dogs and program. I'm glad to report that Jethro is fine--confirmed by a vet check this morning just to be sure of all details. We're grieved over the loss of Visa, but glad to have Jethro back safely. Yes, the community here has been amazingly and wonderfully supportive in this emergency effort, and, in fact, to our program overall. One of my favorite facts to tell about DFA is that we currently have more puppy raisers available (screened, trained, and approved!) than we have correct puppies to place, and I'll assure you, this is not the norm for any service dog group. Certainly is was not for ours, either, until the last year or so. But the Upstate SC area has really banded together behind our program and the difference it's making is phenomenal.
Thanks again to all here for your thoughts and remarks.
