How common or uncommon is incest breeding in German Shepherds?

Incest being a human cultural concept...

What closeness of breeding do you consider "incestuous"?

I did an experimental 2:2 breeding to match the breeding done on my bitches sister... both bitches had the same defects in the pups.  Thus I knew never to go back on my bitches lines.  I've only ever out-crossed since and will continue to do so.

Edited to ad... I also owned a dog that was so closely line bred throughtout his pedigree, that he had one bloodline all the way back to Horund.

When learning about the rottweiler breed I often found it common that the father to daughter  and mother to son was accepted.

When I started doing pedigrees on the german shepherds  I found that there was a lot of the same but also brother to sisters. I don't know if these were accidents or if they were trying to pull back genes. I have also seen many pedigrees that are so linebreed that they should just did a incest breeding and called it even.

Line breeding may be the most popular strategy for some but you should skip a generation.    Never littermates, ever.

I prefer the mix of two unrelated animals who have the qualities one desire's.   At least unrelated within the last five to six generation's.

I have known those who inbreed to reproduce a certain individual but it never works out the way they hoped.

Diversity and careful selection makes more sense.

I thought about incest breeding once but my cousin would have nothing to do with it... Not as much breeding just practice.

Bob,

I too had a favorite cousin...............

And fond memory's of one special summer.

Ah to be young and so innocent.............  that didn't last nearly as long as I would have prefered.

Now I live in a place where everyone's related.... If I had only known...LOL

Moon's.

I am with you on that one. I try to avoid line breeding in first 5 generation.
