Hey guys, another question.  Since I am getting a new puppy soon I'm wondering, what all vitamins or different kinds of suppliments do you guys give your dogs? I've been reading some, and have been told before that vitamin C is good to help their hips and elbows to try to prevent dysplasia.  What all do you guys give to your dogs?

What is your base food source? Kibble or raw?

Most premium kibble has everything you need, don' t over supplment, that can negative effects. With kibble you have to watch what you add, because good foods are rich on everything you need and don't need supplements. If you feed raw, that is a whole different issue. But there are very good raw sources out there that can help you putting together a good diet.

If you feed a good super premium puppy food, you shouldn't need to supplement at all. By good puppy food, I'm talking about the brands like Innova, Nature's Variety, Breeder's Choice, Orijen, the foods you would find at a specialty dog and cat food store. You could also go with Royal Canin Large breed puppy, which some pups do very well on. You could feed raw if you want to and the same type of store carries raw foods suitable for puppies.

Avoid brands like Ol Roy, Purina, Iams, and other bargain brands. They have low quality ingredients.

When you get your pup, feed him the same kind of food he was eating at the breeder's. Many breeders get sample packages for their puppy buyers and you might get a sample. Don't try changing his diet for a week or two. Let him settle in first, then if you want to change foods, do it gradually over several weeks. Puppy digestion is sometimes delicate.

The only supplement I might give a puppy is a little unflavored yogurt. This is to help establish his intestinal flora - the good bugs he needs to digest his food.

Well I intend to feed Taste of the Wild dog food. That is what my Siberian Huskies are on. The Salmon variety. I know it has the fish oils in it already.  Sam1427 he will be on raw when he comes to me.  I'm very unfamiliar with feeding raw, and I don't know how costly it will be either as I've never done it.  I do intend to feed Taste of the Wild because I know it is a pretty good dog food. A little more expensive, I think 42 dollars for 30 lbs, but thats why my Huskies eat.  I just didn't know if anything else needed to be added to their diet or what.
