For the experienced breeder, for a  healthy 4 year-old bitch's first litter, would you have oxytocin ready? What about Sub-Q calcium shots?

Does anyone have any reasonable list of drugs to have?

13-15 days to go. LH surge Oct 4. She is definitely showing, but not big yet unless one looks closely. People who don't know her think she is just show what overweight, not obese. If I were to guess 7-8 pups , but just a guess as I just don't know .

Thanks

one would wonder if you had to ask ,would you know how and when to use these drugs.

You might want to check into using the whelpwise program.  They send you equipment and monitor the delivery and advise you if you should give oxytocin or not.  I have used them for my deliveries and even had a singleton delivered safely.  here is a link:  www.whelpwise.com/

I say by ALL MEANS YES, have a shot on hand. You can't go wrong by having it. My last litter of Yorkies came in the middle of the night, and YES, I had to use it, Thank GOD, my vet gives me ample supply to keep handy!!!

It's cheap enough and can save not only money, but puppies as well.

Would I have Oxytocin on hand.. absolutely!!   I'm also a Vet Tech and have helped in many deliveries both normal and difficult so have a pretty good sense of when to use and when not to use it.  If a bitch is having normal labor I don't  use Oxy until the last pups are delivered, then she receives one shot to be sure to clear all afterbirth and excess fluid from the Uterus.  I do use it if the bitch is having a large litter and seems to tire after a number of pups, or the contractions don't seem to be producing any results.  Learn the right way to use Oxytocin (Pit) shot before you do.  You need to know dosage for a Shepherd sized dog, and frequency as well and to be sure it's been stored properly.

only if you have the knowledge how to use it correctly.   we have been fortunate to have a vet and several other breeders close to us to explain and show us how to use it.

Absolutely!  I've been breeding for 25+ years and wouldn't be without it.  My vet sells me a bottle when I need it, and it keeps for a very long time. But I'm also a registered nurse and have been taught how/when to use it.  If given too early or incorrectly you can rupture the bitch's uterus.
