Gretsch

by Gretsch on 24 November 2008 - 11:11

i bought Ben, my black german shepherd in august of 2007 from a place called High Ridge Ranch... i love my gsd and did not have any difficulties with them.

i have not been able to find a website for them to keep updated on their littrs or even how their other dogs are maturing.

has anybody here bought a dog from these people? i know he probably doesnt care one way or another, but i am interested in showing Ben his family members and wonder if there are any in my area.

has any body here visited their place and then decided not to buy a puppy?

Hello,

I live in Otis Oregon and have 3 GSD. I lived here for more then 30 years. Please let me know there names as I have not heard of this ranch name. I do know of 3 different breeders here though.

that is interesting. the woman i purchased ben from said that she had more than 30 years experience breeding the pups. her name is Benita, i believe. it was up the hill right near that bear statue or something.  she also does guided elk hunts?

This is the Oregon Coast  Puppy Mill.. Run as far away as possiable, Call a local Vet here and see what they have to say, they do not recommend anyone buy from this scam woman...

If anyone would like information on this woman please ask and I'd be more then happy to tell everyone...

i would like more information please.

Well it hard on where to start, for she is one nut case. Anyway she gets her family to buy dogs not in her name when she needs new breeding dogs. She says her paperwork is not back from AKC when you pick up your pup or she will have more then one litter on the ground and will regirster a few of the dogs for people who want papers with limited or full papers. She says she works her dogs on the beach for sled dogs, and also used them as blind dogs. None of this is true. She sells her dogs to pet stores for 200.00 when she can't sell them through the paper. She feeds raw diet, she raises rabbit and also shoots elk and deer for the dogs. She did have power only to her 15 foot trailer, and her dogs during the winter live in a BUS. I have not been up to her place for about 4 years so would be suprised if anything has changed.  She has no refrigeration most of the time and has worked just about everwhere here in town. Her dogs are sick alot and have heart worms and skin problems. She does not OFA her dogs. The sheriff has come very close to closing her down but her family has money adn just seems to get away with this crap. This is the dirtiest and worst condition place I have ever seem. I have been to many breeders in Oregon and she has a just disgusting place.

she told me i couldnt see where they were kept because the mother would become angry and over protective and it was a risk to my safety... but i do remember her telling me about the sledding on the beach, and she said something about the grandpa of my dog being a ski patrol dog...

i probably should have done more research, but i drove from vancouver washington, all the way down to her place in otis to meet her and at that point i didnt feel like driving home without a pup.

i know about this website now, which makes researching breeders alot easier.

i will be getting another german shepherd dog in about a year, i will have to ask around a bit more before selecting the dog.

i have to admit though, Ben was a great deal so far... provided he doesn't develop health problems. he cost 300, and then another 300 for registration, and then i had to pay 35 dollars to the akc to get papers. so 635 plus the vaccinations and wormings... about $800.

but... i guess now that i've added that up, i could find a puppy with better lines and full shots/wormings from a reputable breeder for not far off $800... maybe he wasnt the great deal i thought he was, but whatver he was, i still think he is perfect.

he is doing great and he is very social and so far very healthy and loveing.

i didnt realize she was living in that trailer. she had like 4 campers in a line with the sides off of them at the end of the dog runs for shelter. now i wonder if she ever takes them out of the dog runs.  i also remember wanting to approach the dog runs and she told me it might not be safe, since i was a stranger.

Well, Gretsch, now you have experience. Take good care of your boy and when you decide to get another dog, you'll know what you should look for in a breeder's premises - clean kennels and runs of a good size and you should be able to approach the dogs with the breeder. The parents should not be so sharp (aggressive, nervy) or so shy that you can't meet them.  All dogs on the premises should look healthy  - shiny clean coats, clear eyes, alert dispositions. The pups should be clean and smell good. The parents should have their OFA hip certification. You should be able to see the pedigrees of both parents and hopefully both parents are titled or in the process of being titled. Poppies should have their puppy shots, although some would say don't give shots. I think puppies should have their first year of shots. Ask about food and what the puppies and dogs eat.

Be prepared to visit more than one kennel. Don't get fixed on the idea that you must get a pup at the first visit. Be prepared to walk away if things don't seem right.

Buying a puppy is a risk at any time. No one can guarantee that a pup from champion or VA rated dogs with good hips and elbows won't develop HD or some strange immune disorder. You can do all your homework and then get the one pup in the litter that has problems. But you can help minimize that risk by doing your homework. I know it's hard for a puppy buyer who doesn't know the bloodlines and breeders - and often no one will tell you until it's too late.

Enjoy your dog and take good care of him. I'm sure he's a great boy and I hope you'll have many happy years together.

Well I can recommend some good breeders who run about 800.00 with papers and health checks and OFA's in Oregon and 2 in Washington. You can see there dogs anytime, even before they have a litter ready. There is proabaly 3 that will require you to visit ahead of time and really care where there dogs go. Most of these will want you to see there parents adn tempements, some are at clubs.

The main thing is that you are happy with your dog, and are looking to do some type of training at that all that is important.

yeah ive had him for over a year now... you could say that we are pretty close.

thank you for all of your information. i believe you sent me a link to a breeder in oregon, and the name of another one in waldport, oregon. i will probably check those places out, or if you could send me the information about which specific places do what you say, for 800, i would really appreciate that.

either here or through PM
