Will a long coat be judged more harshly than its short coated counter-part?

I mean on the field...

Depends on what venue you are talking about. My long coat is doing awesome in conformation. He was named Best Of Breed at the biggest UKC show in the United States this past June, over 19 other GSD's. So it depends on the judge, the venue you are in etc. I know in AKC, I talked to a well known judge and he loved my dog, but said he would not place him in a show because of his long coat. Said he had awesome structure etc, but that wouldn't matter in the ring unless another dog had a more serious fault than Chaos. I totally respect his opinion. In UKC, it's a fault but not a disqualifying fault. Some judges love it as the one at Premier and some judges would never pick him in a million years! Depends on what they like and don't like.

It will be interesting to see if there is a sort of "ripple effect" through the different venues when the SV relaxes it's restrictions on longer coats in '09.

I am looking at buying a really well bred pup..he is a long coat black. I am interested in stepping up my level in schutzhund competition and am wondering if I walk into a trial with a long coat black whether or not we will be taken as seriously as if I walked onto the field with his short coated equivalent

Brampton if your dog will bring the fight with him to the field, I don't think any one will mind that he is a long coat, and the people that will they don't matter. All the long coats that I ever had, were always the beset dogs that I owned, good tempers, healthy, and strong like tanks. I would not discriminate due to the dog's coat. I know quite few breeders in my area and if they ever get a long coat they always call me first see if I wan't it (they know I am a sucker for long coats lol). I know that my description of long coat can be generalization, but I never found a bad temper long coat that main focus would be anything else but pleasing you. :)

Shepherd Woman, What's the UKC please?
I think it will have a world wide effect when the SV relax their restrictions! A good long coat IMO can be stunning.

I like a nice longcoat, but to much grooming for me lol It really pales into insignificance compared to some of the faults in our breed!!!!!!

UKC is the United Kennel Club. Check it out at www.ukcdogs.com It's some what like the AKC. Except the UKC allows a few other breeds to theres that the AKC doesn't, as the AKC allows some breeds that the UKC doesn't. The UKC allows the pitbull where as the AKC doesn't. There are UKC shows all over the US just like AKC.
