Have any of you weaned a litter on this food??

I am planning my next litter for may 2009 and want to give them the best start possible but Orijen puppy food is really high in protein and im tearing my hair out trying to find a kibble that is anywhere near as good as orijen:( Timberwolf was my next in line but i cant get it as im in the UK. The last litter was raised on burns and they did ok on it apart from they were prone to ear infections and funny tums now and again also they were on the small side for their age

I  like to get it right so any advice is welcome,

Thanks in advance,

Tracie

I wouldn't do it because of the high protein level, but some people been using it with litters (I think someone on this forum actually did) and had no problems. Is just my opinion that the protein level is too high for pups. Plus I am not fully sold on that food because I switch over my pup and guess what scratching came out lol Completely different result that most of you had lol. Can't quite explain it. I think it is protein level because I tried using a suplement with the old food to increase the protein level and guess what same thing happened, so that is the only explenation that I can come out with.

If you use it keep us update on how the pups will do on it. You so lucky puppy breath :)

Hi Tracie,

You may want to look at what I just ordered (Acana Grain Free PRAIRIE HARVEST).
Champion Pet Foods the makers of Orijen also the produces of the Acana line.
Have now introduced the Acana Grain Free Formula, they are roughly 5-10 bucks cheaper than the Orijen.
Lower in Protein 33% & 34%, and in the PRAIRIE HARVEST & PACIFICA low Calcium 1.3% & 1.4%.
Both would be equally good for Puppies as well as Adults.

I have a 6 month old that has been on Orijen Large Puppy for about 3 months & doing very well.
She was 47 lbs on her 6 month birthday, and is within a lb of litter mates that are on RAW.
I also have an 3 year old that has done very well on Orijen Adult for over a year & a half.

I plan on putting both on the New PRAIRIE HARVEST.

Thats a good looking food. I'd try it if it was in stores near my home. I like it because it DOESN"T have flax in the ingredients which I have found to give my dog the itchies.

I wonder if that is the problem I have with Orijen?

I have never had a problem feeding Orijen, using it now for around 2 years, Top health and Shining Coat full of life

I fed the Dog at about 6 months of age on it

but the Pup i am getting at Christmas is only going to be 8 weeks old, so i want to mix Orijen large breed Puppy witha nother top kibble, but it is hard to get hold of another kibble with as good quality contents but around  24 to 28 % protein

Combine Orijen with that would be perfect

Solid Gold is out and so is Timberwolf, we can no longer get it

Acana we cannot get although made by the same company as Orijen,

Like Tracie i buy mine online from Zooplus and they are cutting off the Dog foods that we like

They say lack of getting the kibble, but they should try harder, as i am a very good customer, but they do not look at it that way.and i say its not good enough

So nowi still cannot find a nother decent kibble to mix in, and after looking now for a month its half way to the Pup coming

Innova puppy is a 5 star puppy food with the lower protein level that you are looking for, & is pretty widely available....the baby brother of EVO. I'm an Orijen user, too...funny, my dogs stopped itching on Orijen, stopped having panno, too....but I worried about the high protein, too, so switched to the Innova for the pups, worked very well. jackie harris

Hello all,

Just for your info, the company that produces Orijen (www.championpetfoods.com) is also producing ACANA. After the vast success with Orijen they have now shifted their ACANA recipe to a similar of Orijen.

So, one may choose from the classical series (for puppies ACANA Large breed puppy) with 33% protein (instead of 44% of Orijen) and the only grain that it contais is rice. If someone doesn't like rice he may try the ACANA Provincial series. However, this is not available for puppies.

At the moment I will use ACANA Large Breed Puppy for my litter...It is worth a try.

I cannot get Acana or Innova over here in Belgium.

We can buy all the Dog Kibbles that i rate 0, but not the ones that i think would do the job

It seems zooplus is a big concern, and i do wonder why they do not give us a choice of Acana or Orijen, being from the same company

But i guess it seems they are not bothered too much about us customers wants in feeding our Dogs

I spoke to someone in Canada from Orijen  two years ago when i first started to use Orijen,  My Pup was about 6 months old then, the fellow told me the protein level was fine for pups and yes it was, He grew steady and was fed on it ever since.

My concern is that the 42% Protein  in the food does not cause an 8 week old pup to grow too fast or overload its system

Its okay to here it will be okay, but it is is not then it is too late to alter it

And i am not prepared to risk the Pup by trying it out at 8 weeks old

It would be better to mix it with an inferior kibble to bring the Protein content down 12%

Steve,

I had to Order with an Orijen Retailer, the New Acana Grain Free PRAIRIE HARVEST, & I'm in Canada.
It's very new on the market, any Retailer that can get Orijen should be able to get it.
Can you get the Orijen Large Puppy?
