That's so..."lifelike"! Cool video, thanks. This project was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), that orchestrates R&D for the DoD. If you go to their website and follow the [DARPA Programs] tab, you can find hundreds of cool projects, from "Fracture Putty" to computer super sniffers. http://www.darpa.mil/
I recently saw a magazine special fully dedicated to robots for US military, with tons of other prototypes. I can't remember who published it, maybe Popular Mechanics. The article you linked referred to the "MULE", Multifunctional Utility/Logistics and Equipment vehicle shown below, but can be used as a generic term. Anything to secure the welfare of our future "sofa-soldiers", I suppose.

You can bet that the "bigdog" is going to be the new urban crimefighter in a few years. It will have high tech cameras, speakers and microphone, willl talk to people and be remote operated by satellite from a counsel many miles away. It will be armed with onboard, built in, armored shotgun, machine gun, rockets, stun grenade launcher, laser to temporarily blind, tasers, pulsed microwave "heat gun", traffick ticket printer and robotic arms to post on vehicles or hand tickets for any violation to the public. It will be powered by an electric operated hydraulic servo system that is powered by a self contained nuclear power pack. It will have wall penetrating infrared, xray and scalar wave functions, and high tech sound sensors for gunfire and explosions and laser window sensing voice recognition technology for recording conversations from blocks away. It will be able to outrun any human track star and most vehicles. It's cameras will be linked to facial image, gait image and retinal image identification software, as well as a fingerprint glass window terminal reader. It will be made in larger versions and used as an infranty soldier in warfare.
Thanks for the video clip TessJ10. It is awesome.

Preston, you must've taken the red pill. ;-)

I have seen a demo of this, as well as a much smaller and faster unit on the engineer's topic and blog site to that I subscribe. So far, the most serious limiting factor is the size and run time of its power supply. The smaller version actually has "legs" of a sort. You can see it at this link: http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/4510/Interesting-Quadruped-Robot

Thanks for the other links!
My daughter sent me the one I originally posted - it's a wonderful invention but was sort of creepy when I first watched it. Actually, I watched it several times - just couldn't look away!

OK, I said my daughter sent me the first video. I just got an email from my son, who said, "Indeed, I have seen this before. In Germany we would get drunk and watch this and have nightmares. But have you seen this?" and if you want a good laugh, check out another version of BigDog:

d, you are not only poorly informed, but quite ignorant.

by darylehret on 03 November 2008 - 01:11
You insult too easilly. If genius like yours comes with that level of paranoia, I'll take my ignorant bliss any ol' day. There oughta be some steep traffic fines to pay for that nuclear powered robot.
