O.K NOW HOW WOULD YOU KEEP LARGER DOGS ?
by moondust on 26 October 2008 - 05:10
THATS SAD BUT THOSE ARE ALL SMALL DOGS I MEAN THE LARGER ONES TOOYOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY KEEP THAT MANY LARGE DOGS LIKE THAT

Not sure what you mean. Basically, Puppy Mills are run purely for profit without any regard to the well being of the animals being bred. Generally there is no regard as to genetic issues- and the value of the bitches are purely on the puppies they can pump out. Large or small, the animals normally live in cramped areas with limited human interaction, and are kept only for breeding purposes. There is more profit in the smaller breeds because you can shove more dogs into smaller cages and limited space therefore have more bitches to breed. and more puppies to sell. This is generally why we see the smaller dogs "featured" when reading about puppy mills. Generally, the living conditions are deplorable. If you research puppy mills more...thru google, etc. I'm sure you will run across some puppy mills which focus on the large breed dogs. They do exist. I will try to find info on some of the large breed puppy mills and post it on my website.
There must be a reason why you are inquiring.... ?

Just keep in mind there are thousands of well meaning folks that might breed a litter or two - but also keep in mind the hundreds of thousands of dogs that are euthanized every year. It is not just the mixed breeds and designer breeds...there is a HUGE percentage of pure bred dogs of every breed that end up at the shelters, including carefully planned litters from well known breeders/kennels. I wouldn't consider any of them "puppy mill" operations, but the reality is that many end up in shelters.
It is mind boggling the number of rescue organizations out there that do their best to save the dogs that have been kicked to the curb for the worst excuses - and I know there are some individuals on this message board that rescue GSD's - I believe Hodie is one of them. It's a pretty sad state of affairs... so - no - I don't think you would qualify as a puppy mill, but please think twice before breeding ...
Have a great evening- I'm signing off for the night
