After listening to numerous conversations about the Dog Whisperer, I finally watched an episode. My question is why would a trainer, either a working trainer or a personal trainer, feel the need to kick a dog in his hind quarters? He would be walking the dog and if the dog acted up, he would swing his right foot behind his left leg and "kick" the dogs hind quarters.
As a federal officer, believe it or not, but we're not allow to "obedient" train ours, just the basics, so I'm a little confused as to why Caesar does that. I have been a handler for 12, so if any one can explain why, I would appreciate it.?
Thanks, K9lass

I wouldn't call it a kick lol. More of a touch. Its just to divert the dog's attention. Snap him out of it so to speak. Different trainers use different methods, that's just one of them. And as Ceaser would say, he is not training the dog, he is training the human and rehabilitating the dog.

I've also wondered why a so called dog expert would advise owners to regularly treadmill a puppy, who is not fully developed yet. It was the episode with the dalmation at the fire house.
His show is good for ideas for the average pet owner, but certainly not the be all and end all. I have yet to see a single dog featured whose problems could not also be resolved through solid obedience training.

Thanks Brady Bee for that info. I wonder if that would on my mali, ummm? Nah, not with her, too stubborn! by the time Vela would finish with Ceasar, she would (continue) be the alpha! She is only 44 pounds, looks like a dog from a refugee camp, but one of the best drug dogs I have ever seen! She is fed 6 cups a day, but her energy is so high, she burns it off quickly, wished I could do that. anyway, thanks again for the info.

Caeser rehabilitates "problem pets" for owners who request his help.Never seen one client of his not happy with the end result. All his own dogs, including ex fighting pit bulls are testiment to the mans training ability. Remember guys the vast majority of dogs are pets, and that is what he deals with, pet owner errors,he deserves a medal. If it was not for Caeser most of the dogs he deals with would be in a dog shelter somewhere, maybe even dead. So give credit where credit is due. liz

Believe me, I WAS NOT taking credit away from him and Thank God he has the ability to correct "problem children", I just didn't understand the "kick" to the hind quarters until now. i wish he could do something with Vela, but I will take her as is!

The only time two trainers will agree is when pointing out third trainer mistakes. LoL.
Kick is to get the dog to refocus, I seen many trainers using it, it is more like a tap rather than kick.
Nothing wrong with tread miling a puppy if I would have tread mill I would do it without a doubt. And yeah bla bla bla grow plaith b/s and etc. Sorry I just don't buy into it I let the dog be dog, I won't let him work him self to a heart attack or jump from anyting higher than 2 feet but everything else she/he is on his own. Let the nature do what it was intented to do. Some people just pamper dogs too much.

Well said liz and snaiper69. Caeser tries to show owners THE most important (IMHO) part of owning ANY breed of dog----You MUST be the pack leader.
