Can a 9 month old male German Shepherd overcome a LP1 rating? He is tall and still growing into his body. He is not fearful or anything. He is just lanky for this age.  I think he will grow into a nice GSD.

This rating was not just based on being tall or lanky, but overall structure and/or a serious temperament fault. Is it possible to grow to be a good representative of the breed after receiving such a rating? Well, anything is possible. But I will tell you this. I have seen less than ONE handful of such ratings in my life when it came to conformation shows, in many countries. Judges RARELY give an LP and when they do, something is normally dramatically wrong with structure, temperament, missing testicles, etc. Do you have a critique of the dog? Care to send me a photo privately? If so, I will be happy to give you an opinion, but that is just what it is until and unless another judge sees the dog.

If the pup is showlines, probably done. But, conformation judges are so often so very biased against working lines, that I wouldn't get too fussed about it. the working folks generally do not show in the puppy classes anyway. The 18-24 mos old class is sufficent for the show rating required for a survey. I have a lanky-looking 9 month old myself. I swear she looks like an Ibizan hound right now. You would not catch me putting her in a show now for love nor money!! I just hope she fils out and becomes a swan by the time she is 2!!! LOL

Thank you. He is a show / working line pup. He is an alternative bloodline free of Ursus. He is going to be on the large side. I fear too large for the show ring but I will see. I am going to try to overcome the LP1 rating just to see if I can. I am new at this. It would be different if he was a below standard pup but I understand that he needs some work . You should see him in person. He really stands out. His bite work is coming along prettyy well too. Do you show or do you have working line?

email me and I will show you some pictures of him. They are alright pictures ...

I have only working lines, now. I started with a half and half who looked show, worked like a sable.

Don't scratch the dog out just because of his look, he is only 9 months, he might still have chance.

Thank you. I plan on taking him to another show in about 6 months. That will give me time to work on stacking him and gaiting.

I think 9 months is about the worst time, especially for a male. They seem to go all wrong at that stage. I have had that happen with two young males (from the same mother), both later ended up winning first places in shows. One of them that I showed at that age only got a P rating (he had got VP1 in his first show). I sold him, as at that stage it really looked like he was not going to fulfill the expectations that I had had of him as a small puppy. He always had a fantastic temperament and bitework and continued with his training. It turned out that he got back into the show scene and just won Young Seiger here, in Ecuador (18-24 months), admittedly in a small category, but even so....An experienced breeder recently told me that if you decide to keep a male as a small puppy, don't even look at him (critically) again until he is 15 months old, then make your final decision, not before! Good luck with your dog.

I had a female (also working/show cross) get a LP rating at around the same age.  She was fat (I didnt know better at the time), had no ring training at all, wouldnt even stand still, I should never have shown her, but I was extremely new and didnt know any better.  Not to mention she was sable and looked like a working line dog.

She went on to be SchH3 IPO3 SG in conformation and Kkl2.  Glad I didnt give up on her at 9 months :)  Her granddaughter and grandson just got their SG ratings last weekend in the 18-24 month classes.
