Hello Everone,

I have a 6 month old GSD that has been on Nutro Max large breed puppy Dry and canned food. Her Breeder had her on it when we got her. However she is Finicky and eats it okay but sometimes she doesn't finish all of her food. I feed her twice a day 2 1/2 cups of dry Nutro max Large Breed puppy mixed with 1/2 can of same brand puppy Canned. She looks skinny and I'm not sure if it's because she has alot of filling out to do. She is VERY ACTIVE and Playful, Happy But I am considering switching her food to Solid Gold Wolf Cub Large Breed Puppy? Have any of you used this food? Any Suggestions on what is the best food to have a GSD Puppy on? I only want what's best for my girl! Any Brand Food Suggestions would be helpful. Thanks...

You are probably feeding the pup WAY too much food. It has little to do, within reason, with the brand of food you feed as long as it is not pure garbage like Ol Roy from Walmart, as an example. But if the dog does not finish all her food, ever, it tells you she is either ill or getting too much food and not hungry. I would bet if you cut down to a TOTAL of 3 DRY measure cups a day, your problem will be resolved. Then keep her lean. This too is important. There are many good kibbles. I feed Royal Canin, others Canidae, others what you feed, Solid Gold etc. Feed reasonable amounts per the activity level and you will be fine. A walk around the block once a day is not sufficient exercise. Get her some real exercise too.

Good luck

As Hodie says you are feeding way too much food, If any living thing leaves its food there is only two reasons for it

It is ill or ailing or it is not hungary and in your case it is not hungary so feeding it less will solve your problem

Keep it lean and mean, The Pup will look better and it will eat what it is given

Steve you stealing my sentence :) I agree mean and lean :) you feeding a lot of food to that dog, I feed my 4 months old 2 and she is active, I ad 1/3 can of meat but I keep her wanting more, if she starts being picky I cut back to keep her always want little bit more. As well I will feed her only one cup of dry once a week on sunday that usually makes her eat really good at least till thursday :). Most dogs owners just overfeed their dogs, dog in the wild including puppy, eats only what he can hunt and sometimes he might not get anything.

My pup was fincky at first untill I started using a variation on a "recipe" someone told me about. I feed Innova Large Breed Puppy. 2 cups kibble + one cup hot water + several tbsps of canned mixed in well. 2 x a day. I used Innova canned puppy the first few months. Now, for variety, use Evanger's Organic Chicken. Sometimes mix it with other canned, like PetGuard Organic Vegan to keep it tasty for her. Her absolute favorite is Merrick's canned Turducken - give her 1/2 can, without water added, w/ her kibble Sunday dinners as a treat. She has been licking the bowl and looking for more. Everyone says she is looking very good on the 4 cups a day. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

It's normal and good for a GSD puppy of that age to look lean. Feed her less, at least a cup and maybe two cups per day less. You want them to lick the bowl clean and want just a little more. Don't give them just a little more, though.  And don't listen to people who tell you your puppy's too lean. She's only too lean if you can count her ribs while she's just standing quietly. When she's panting after a dash across the yard, you should be able to just barely see her last ribs under her coat.
