Just FYI Canidae is changing its formula and adding additional grains to its food. They claim it makes it "Better."

I'm not sure on the 'better' part.  But I have noticed the lighter color as they state.  I use lamb and rice.  The digestability is better.  This new formula breaks down much quicker than the original.  I use enzymes, and must wait for the food to 'digest' before  feed it.  I have so far had no bad reaction in my dogs to it.

Yes, Canidae did change it's formula. And for those that are interested in avoiding manufacturing companies with a hisory of recalls: Canidae is now copacked by Diamond Pet Foods.

How do you get these updates about formula and packaging changes?

Ew, Diamond foods suck. Lower the quality and raise the price, that's a pisser. Don't know about you guys, price of canidae just went up out by me.

If you use Canidae and are changing foods as a result of the change in formula what brand are you changing to?  I'm looking for options as the Diamond thing worries me

Upcoming changes to Canidae formulations
Admin | June 30, 2008 3:56 pm

I wanted to give a heads up to dog owners feeding Canidae products about a few details that the makers of this product aren't telling you in their sales pitch for their changed formulas:

Under the new formulation, Canidae dry foods will no longer be gluten free, due to the addition of barley. If you know that your dog is gluten intolerant, start shopping around for a different food.

Even if your dog doesn't have problems with gluten (not all do, and many foods do contain high-gluten grains like barley), the change in formulation to include rice bran and peas may contribute to gas and digestive upset. Dogs who aren't particularly sensitive may not have any problems at all, others will get over it within a few days of transitioning, but again, for individuals with a delicate digestive system, expect that they may no longer tolerate the product.

Millet is generally well tolerated, but again, it doesn't work for every dog.

"Diversifying" ingredients may sound catchy, and Canidae certainly has made an effort to put a positive spin on it in their statement, but please remember that not all dogs do well on foods that include a wide variety of items.

Also note that "Herring Meal" will be replaced by generic "Ocean Fish Meal", meaning the company reserves the possibility to use different fish from batch to batch without having to change the ingredient list. This has not been addressed in their statement at all.

Whether these changes are indeed an improvement, as Canidae claims, is for you to decide - after observing how it affects your dog.

Canidae Chicken & Rice
(Note that after the change it's no longer going to be a true "Chicken and Rice" formula, but instead a "Chicken, Rice, Barley and Peas" formula)

Canidae Lamb & Rice

The old formula has already been overwritten. "Lamb and Rice" formula will now also be a misnomer - even though it's legal as far as labeling regulations go. This is the current ingredient list:

We were a Canidae dealer, and we stopped carrying Canidae due to things we saw in the dogs. I dont want to badmouth them, but we switched to Innova.  We are working with Iams research lab (their headquarters is local) and they have provided us with some new stuff that is amazing. It is unlabeled, and we simply provide feedback, but for the higher drive Mals that we could not keep weight on, it worked well, so for the first time, I am considering Iams products as well.

Isn't Iams now owned by Procter & Gamble?

How can this be a reliable product. Most of these companies buy these dog food companies to off their waste products to manufacture dog foods.

I think I'd rather stick to Canidae then to go to Iams.

That's my opinion though so don't take it seriously.

I fed Canidae exclusively for about four to five years.  About 18 months ago I noticed two of our higher drive GSD's were not maintaining weight and their coats were becoming dull.  I started feeding same amount, twice a day and the weight loss stopped with a slight gain, but no change to skin or coat, there was also and increase in dander as well.  Started to search for another food.  I loved the Innova RF but was cost prohabitive with a multi dog house hold.  Solid Gold Wolf King I liked a lot as well but did not stick with because of cost.

For the last year or so we have been alternating between Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover, Adult formula and Innova Adult.    We really like the results of  the Chicken soup and we get the 35 lbs. bag for $31US.
