thanx everyone. i did research Pano but wanted to hear from people with GSD.
i am taking him off the rimadyl.
he is limping on it but can put weight on it. i am trying to keep him quit/relaxed but it's pretty hard.
i will have him xrayed if it doesn't get better. Thanx again

My GSD "Viggo" has had Pano on and off since he was about 9 mths. The diagnosis can be confirmed by x-ray. It may well be associated with food although our vet is sceptical on that point as it is far more common than one might think.
I agree with Adi and Jenni78. Rimadyl is far too strong for a pup as young as yours and I would get him off it as soon as possible. Our vet proscribes Metacam ( meloxicam) which is milder and more suited to Pano.
It is a bit scary when you first see your beloved pup suffering but I have spoken to quite a few people, read a lot of articles on various websites and had a long discussion with our vet. The informed opinion is that it can, and will often recur. it can affect pups as young as 5 mths and can still affect them up to 3 years. It will often manifest itself in different limbs too, as i expect you are aware. GSD's grow quickly at first but can continue to grow bone well into their 2nd year.
I trust our vet and she assures me that it will eventually go. Yes, there can be complications but often they can be associated with another underlying problem your dog might have. Don't get too frightened by the horror stories you read. You can get pet hypochondria!
The best advice I got was simply to use my common sense. Metacam when the symptoms are noticable, gentle exercise but don't cut it out. As Adi says.....your pup will self exercise and will know when he has had enough. Try to not let him go up stairs though. Not good for a young pup.
Viggo had his first bout around 9mths, second when he was about 15 mths. His third bout was last month at 21 mths. Each time the recovery time was less...........last mth he was fine after 4/5 days.
Try not to worry too much. Easier said than done I know. Viggo is nearly 2 yrs now and apart from his Pano is a big boisterous, healthy brute!
