I hate when people just walk up and pretend they are the dog whisperer with a dog. Some times I'm rude and just tell them get lost.I usually see them coming so I walk away before they get to my dog.Im pretty good at pretending I didnt see them.

When my girl was 8 months old we went to a friends home for a visit. The neighbors mutt came flying over in a full ragging attack. Thank God I had my dog on a leash as she kicked in hard core defense.. The other dog did not know what hit it and I did not know mine had it! LOL.. No one was hurt as I had redirected my dog away and out of the situation.. But just made me realize how fast a good dog will kick in to protect its master.

Dogs are "situational learners" so if you want solid obedience, you need to do it everywhere you can and "proof" them to all of the situations that may arise - from wierd noises to stupid people (more common it seems)...
My shepherd serves as my Mobility Assistance dog and there are certainly SOME things you just can't "proof" for - like this past weekend when the chimps at Busch Gardens became enraged and hurled huge chunks of wood and rocks at us - but then a good temperament should prevent a bad "choice."

I take the Dogs to the main road and let them get used to the Farm tractors, Lorries and Cars passing them etc twice a week
Also i drive to the city 8 kms and walk the dogs around for 30 minutes or so. I do not allow the public to touch them unless they ask first and then i give them a treat to give to the Pups, but not pet them, just a quick stroke on the head
It is good for them
In Two weeks young Goran takes his BH test, last thursday night he had a traffic test at the Club
He was off leash at a Down, Six Handlers and Dogs walked passed him within three yards, then a runner went by, followed by a Cycle then two Cars with headlights on
He stayed at the down, in fact i thought he was dozing off for a bit, he was so relaxed
So the work in traffic pays off

I have trained at shopping centers, strip malls, outside the garage when my truck is getting an oil change, outside the hospital in the parking lot waiting for my mother, etc. I love putting them in front of the automatic doors in a stay to get them used to focusing on me when the door keeps opening and closing. It is a great way to practice for the traffic test and my dogs sit and down stays are wonderful. It is one way I can get extra training in with my current busy schedule. Now if only one of these places had a decent tracking field............
Most people ask first to pet my dogs, but mainly are just blown away at seeing such well behaved dogs. It is amazing how many people think my dogs are extrodinarily well behaved and trained. I am always telling them you should see some of the dogs at our training class.
The training I have done at the shopping and strip malls has really helped with my current situation. My mother moved in with me in May and has been in hospice care at my house since August. I have nurses, social workers and aids coming in and out of the house several times a day. All I have to do is put them in a down stay in one room and they stay there watching them work, but don't budge. I cannot tell you how amazed the hospice workers are that they actually listen to what I tell them to do, lol. I keep hearing stories of the out of control dogs they have to deal with everyday and how they worry that a certain dog is going to injure one of their hospice patients because it is running around and jumping and out of control.
