I think London about summed it up best. You're not the first or the last person who was targeted by one of those slime balls. It happens to even the most experienced people. I remember looking for my first GSD on my own....I was so overwhelmed with all the places, lines, prices and people trying to throw in the moon and stars that my head was spinning off my shoulders. That's when I knew I needed someone that knew what the hell they were doing to find me the perfect dog. I have little kids too, needed a certain type of dog for a specific job....money wasn't really an issue but I was not about to drop $25000 or $75000 for one of those "executive estate dogs" either. lol I took my time, knew what I wanted and after 3 months of searching I had a friend find me my very first GSD who turned out to be the most incredible dog I've ever owned AND I didn't have to mortgage the house to buy him. lol
At the time I didn't even know about the database so it made matters even more frustrating. Have you tried googling "personal protection dogs"??? lol There's about a million sites. Consider yourself lucky to have stumbled across this site it will give you a world of information. If you find someone you're thinking to buy from do a search. If you've made a 'friend" on here send them a PM and ask...most of the people here will be forthcoming with information.
Good Luck with your search and keep us posted if you find anything.

Hi candis,
So sorry you have to wade through the crap, but it looks as though you are doing a good job
Sounds like you are looking for an older dog, as pre-limbed dogs are usually 1 to 1 1/2 years old.
I have pups but I don't advertise on here, but I love posting pics of my mutts on here.
It's fun learning about the GSD, I love reading these posts, your topic is a very good one, you don't
sound as though you can be taken to the cleaners, keep researching
You should consider yourself lucky that you haven't been scammed yet, it can happen to anyone.
I do not ship my pups, cause even us breeders can be scammed, and I don't want my pups abused, that's
just how I do things.
Good luck searching for a pup, and remember when dealing with someone unfamiliar,
just Google their name or kennel name, or also go to: whitepages.com and do a reverse look-up of their
phone number, that's what I do to most of my puppy buyers, I want to know where they are going to live.
Also, put someone's address in zillow.com there's not much in the way of information that can't be looked up
on a computer
Good Luck in your search

I know exactly what you are going thru. It took me 8 months to find a breeder I could trust and I could work with that really cares about her pup's and the buyer. Believe me it isn't easy.
I know people who have taken 2 years to find the right match. But if you look on this forum everyday you will see buyers who have gotten screwed blued and tattoted.
So you need to take your time and find exactly what YOU want not what some breeder tells you what you want. I paid $1000.00 for a working line female pup from SCH 3 parents. You can find pup's for less if you look hard enough. The key is to find a breeder you can trust..
Here are a few tips place an ad it's free in the request to buy section of this forum. Take a look at the puppy section of this forum lot's to choose from. Take your time patience is a virtue and will pay off in the long run. When you find a breeder your interested in ask for references at least 3 and contact them also ask for a vet reference. If you still have questions about that breeder put a post on this forum and ask if anyone has any info on that breeder.
There are plenty of really good breeders on this forum but it's up to you to decide which one is best for You. If you know exactly what your looking for it makes it a lot easier. Best of luck to you.

My suggestion is to NOT look in the puppy adds. Browse the breeders here...
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/breeders.html
Find a few that have the kind of dogs you like, try for driving distance from home so you can go visit and check them out. Do a check via internet as was suggested, check ripoffreport.com and ask about them here or on other dog boards. It does take time and effort, your not ging to Sears to buy a Maytag washer/dryer. A breeders guarantee is only as good as they are.

Candis,
I don't know where you are located, but if you are near any schutzhund clubs GO OUT to the clubs and ask about where the members got their dogs. Ask them about breeders and what they produce, as well as their business practices. My experience has been that the schutzhund folks have NO qualms whatever in steering you away from the crooks, liars, puppy-millers and breeders of poor temperaments in face-to-face conversations. You are likely to learn things that will make your hair curl. People will tell you things in a personal conversation that NONE of them is stupid enough to put in writing on a public forum.
