Don't do it this way...

Pearlie,
I would actually face the door towards a structure, like a house or kennel building or something like that, and allow only about 2 feet (just enough space for the dog to walk comfortably between the structure and the dog house)between the door and the structure! But deffinately not facing the north or into the wind UNLESS you have a good wind block such as a building!! Then and only I would face a dog house into the north but it would be 2 feet from the house/structure!
Does that make sence?

Point the dog house toward's the south east like a bee hive for the morning sun.
Prevailing wind's are usually from the west. The cold wind's are northwesterly.
A dog in a kennel on a cold day without a dog house to get in is a cold dog... wind breaks do help.
I have seen plenty of commercial building's with flat sloped roof's collapse under a sudden heavy snow.

One thought woud be to build a pergola with a low pitch (say 3/12) leave it open in the summer. if you used stout lattice work spaced closeley (say 2x4's) you could get away with tarping it in the winter as long as you wee somewhat dilligent in keeping snow off
But as two moons said before do it right and have the peice of mind that it will last....

You can purchase a "shade clothe" from Wal Mart for $25.00 & cover your pens. It won't hold up to snow without support so you'll have to support it with something. I use them to help shade the play area and keep too much sun from getting into the kennel (under aluminum roof area) when the sun sets in the afternoon. It is very hot in Florida.
