You ask a question in your first post, then you answer it in your last post.,That makes no sense at all

Don was replying to your first post as if you were new to the game of breeding

Now, i have kept Dogs for 57 plus years and never bred one litter so i do not know how to go about it regards the best way to protect the health of the mother, feeding her and Pups, but i guess you were asking to evaluate a Pup, presumably for a working prospect

To get down it it

Now if i had a Female and was going to breed from her

I would read and ask experts in that subject, and learn all i can, Before i ever  contempated ever putting two Dogs together to breed, Breeding of the Dogs and soundness, and  in Conformation and Bones , and lines is already thought off

This would also apply to how to pick out the best for my means of that litter to keep

in other words i would do my homework first very thoughly indeed

As it turns out i am getting a female Puppy Christmas for the first time in 57 odd years of Dogs, mine have always been Males, but i know what sort of female pup i am looking for and i have the first choice of the females in that litter but only time will tell me if i pick right

I knew the basices of keeping a female But i have been asking and reading up now before i ever ordered the Pup, so i now know the insides and outs of the keeping of the female Dog, not a lot of differnence but there is a little and a few things learned

You do not know shit cause if you did you would word your question that would reflect that.just cause your dogs are german imports you have knowledge to brred dogs now.majority of the breeders have import dogs and they should not be breeders not only because they do not know what they are doing but do not need any more dogs being bread.every freaking tom dick and harry want to breed shepherds. why do you want to breed in first place what possible reason could you have.why do't you just have fun  and enjoy yhese dogs.german shepherd breeders are dime a dozen. and i want to be the one to tell you that.please do something else.have a nice one.

Tigermouth

How can anyone contemplate breeding  from the dog you point out in your above post

the breeding has no substance to it, plus not even the Hips and Elbows do not look to have be done, or in its parents and very little in the following generations,

Certainly does not seem a good breeding prospect to me, then is none of my business is it

just for interest , to whom are you refering to in your post it does not give any idea

I assume that this is the bitch that is being bred as it appears to be the only bitch in his kennel

Have someone in your area who has experience with bringing up a working puppy check your litter out before any are sold.  If it's the black bitch in your profile info I'd hope that you bred her to a working line male...so have the owner of the sire also help you with the litter evaluation, Her pedigree looks like it's 100% American line... and as someone mentioned the OFA info seems to be missing on many of the  dogs involved.

I know my own considerations on choosing a puppy is that while I'd like to do PPD work, and perhaps title the dog I'm not planning on top level competition, so would chose a less "drivey" dog than someone who's going to be out at trials on a regular basis hoping for HIT and such. Without knowing just how aggressive you are going to be with the dog's future it's hard to say what would be best for you.  Talk to breeders in your area, talk to competition people in your area,  have them look at the parents and pedigree of the litter and listen to their opinions of what you might expect.

You can't blame the less than supportive tone of some posts, as your first one did give the impression you weren't experienced.  Maybe if you gave more info including pedigrees and titles on the parents/grandparents and such you could get a more detailed response...

My gsd is going to have a some pups and I was wondering how you pros on here determine which pups have the working drives and which pups are more for family homes. I am curious because I am looking to keep one pup with working drives and possibly obtain some titles on him/her.

You sound like a complete amateur. You don't even have the courtesy to post the pedigree of the parents or explain what kind of work you intend to do. Puppy tests are far secondary to genetic heritage in getting a working dog. The best pup amongst a litter or little sh**s is going to be poor, especially if you say you want to "obtain some titles". I wonder if this post is because one of your buyers has asked you to choose a puppy for them to try their hand at "work/sport".

Here's how you should have done it.

1. Decide what sport you want to participate in. What level of competition, club/nationals etc.

2. Go along to a club. Spend a few weeks at least learning about the sport and what the demands are on the dog.

3. Get an experienced trainer to evaluate the bitch. If they think it has little or no qualities necessary for working then i wouldn't breed from her.

4. If she has the raw material then start looking for a stud to complement her weaknesses - grip, power, speed, trainability, handler bond, hardness, prey drive, food drive, defence, tracking, etc. I am not talking about working vs showlines as a good dog is a good dog.

5. Then when the puppies are on the ground, get some help from experienced evaluaters who have knowledge about the sport you are interested in, especially if this is your first time choosing a working candidate. You need to choose the pup based on the work you want to do. Aggression in SCH may not be useful for SAR or pet therapy and so on.

The GSD world is better off without random, ignorant breeders trying to pass off their pups as working candidates. Just because it is a GSD doesn't mean it will work or that ou will be able to "obtain some titles" with the little sh**t.
