Shelley Strohl

by Shelley Strohl on 04 October 2007 - 18:10

I'm having the same problems with Portia. I finally went to a little compulsion last night, back-tying her on the pole and teaching her to sit in front of me with the dumbell with the second leash under it and look in my eyes. Hopefully I won't have to get ugly with her, but tnothing else has worked so I'm back to the way I always used to teach her. I suspect its going to take me another month to get her correct. My male, Bijou, is taking to it like a duck to water just with motivation, thank goodness

Shelley. I also do the cable /leash tie-out. With compulsion. Only I make them hold quiet and firm before pivoting in front. This is all finished before I would ever even think of throwing. As always teach the last piece first.

I do not use compulsion, never found it necessary, especially in the retrieve.

I think you should go right back to basics, teach your dog to hold for incrementally longer periods.

Wow, I was surprised to see this old thread bumped up.

I'd like to state that my boy is doing so much better.  I took the advice of no correcting in front of me, ever!  I also took the advice of backing up.  I'd do so in a playful manner, offering slight tug games with the dumbell in his mouth.  I'd offer tugging, and then gentle stroking under the chin, all the while praising, then trott back a couple more paces.  He began holding it longer and longer, following me as I backed up.  He will now bring it at a run, sit and hold.  The hold is not as firm a grip as I'd like, but we are so much better than we were back when I asked for help.   And he now looks like he's having fun while doing so.

I turned the excersize into a fun game, went back to some basics, and his stress slowly dissapeared.

The advice I recieved in this thread helped tremendously.

Cool!

I bumped this thread because I thought it not only had some great advise, it was a very good training topic.  I figured some people who perhaps had not seen it before might want to add to it, maybe add more advise or ask more questions related to dumbbells.   After all:
Retrieve on the  Flat   = 10
Ret over meter Jump = 15
Retrieve over  Wall     = 15

40 points is one HELL of a big chunk of the score!

Good thread you picked to bump, Sueincc. I've only been reading this board for a bit over a year, so even if I search for things I might not hit on the right combination of words or a helpful thread might get lost in all the clutter.  It's too snowy, slick, and cold to be out training and there's no football on today so here I am.

teach him hold as a seperate command. and when he is holding it the way you want him to tell him ok and give him a reward.

once he knows to bring it and to hold it, you can work on each sepreately or at the same time.
