Ok folks I am not making fun of the ad or the ad's owner. I am making fun of my own quirky brain that sometimes is just too literal for my own good. Under latest classifieds on the right saw an ad I just had to click on http://www.pedigreedatabase.com//classifieds.viewad?adid=243823  " steamed female... high quality" . Took me a good few minutes before I figured it out. Meanwhile the giggles had set in along with the side order of fries.

Ah the sad signs of advancing age - finding humor in the oddest of places. Of course I really can't blame age. Back before the web when folks actually read newspapers, our local paper carried a separate line by line listing of the late night movies which I read a. because I'm a night owl and b. because often there were inadverdent funnies created by the juxtapostion of two or more titles. One of my favorites was the midnight movie "The man who was hanged" followed at 2am by the the movie "The girl he left behind". Often wondered if the scheduler was bored and this was his way of lightening things up.

Another favorite is in CA instead of posting rocks falling in areas where slides are common they post "rock (as in the singular) falling" and my initial response was oh at what time? Is it once a day or more - does it have a matinee also? Has it already fallen today or is it only once a week?  Like I said - a quirky mind.

Hope you'll forgive the post. It's been 2 yrs today since I lost my Rem and just needed to find a smile someplace.

Oh and then there are the signs on CA99 about every 30 miles that say disposal site. Me being from New England originally thought - My god no wonder CA is the land of the fruits and nuts they have hazardous waste sites all over the blooming place because to me that's what a disposal site was.

Took me a loooong time to realize they were talking about what we called the town dump.

I noticed that ad myself and didn't like to ask what was meant by steamed, so TIG I'm sure you're not alone with the giggles!!

It sounds like she came into heat and was bred on the date given in the ad.

So, maybe 'steaming' means being in heat in whatever language the poster was translating from?

Reliya, I came to the same conclusion Sunsilver came to. I think probably a mechanical translator was used. I know I often use one without knowing or thinking about whether it got it wrong or not.

But for example much of German dog language is idiomatic - specialized so you will get a different translation if you try to translate the german words individually. For example I think it's winkelung which means hindquarter angulation but literally translates to long thigh bone - which is correct we just interpret the meaning differently. You will see in past threads on the overdone topic of whether GSDs have wolf in them(no) I've always said you have to be careful of translated materials because of a. the knowledge of the translator not only of the language but of the subset of dog language and 2. their agenda.

In this case the advertiser probably said in his language either in heat or in season but the mechanical translator not knowing dog language translated it as a cooking term thus my giggles.

Of course there are bitches who when in heat......
