It's nice when science can document what dog people have known since they encountered their first dog--helps when trying to explain "Why dogs" to those who were born without the canine-centric gene. Thanks for the link, GSD!

I have owned many dogs and have been around dogs for 50+ years, I can never really remember a time when we didn't own dogs. They feel, sense and know our emotions probably better than we do. And can read emotions we as humans have a hard time reading from others.

One day last year, before I got Eska,I was having a bit of a meltdown. At the first tears, Star came and put her head in my lap. Of course, Ranger then had to get in on the act too. Then, I felt something brush my face. My little black cat had jumped up on the back of the chair, and as soon as the dogs made room, he came and settled in my lap!

Few things are more comforting than a warm, purring body curled up in your lap. I know they sense emotions too, though not as well as dogs do. When I was growing up, we had a half-Burmese cat that would stand between members of the family that were yelling at one another, and meow until they stopped. He seemed very upset by their arguments, and would pace back and forth between the people, looking up at first one of them then the other and meowing as loudly as he could. (He had a rather soft meow.) He's the only cat I've ever known that did this, and he also happened to be the smartest cat I've ever known.
