I have an extremely nice imported male. Multiple titles, all health tests done, but he was an unproven breeder when we imported him. Bred him to an experienced female his first time, they tied once, she came up open. Bred him to another experienced female this last summer, tied once, she had 3 healthy pups (she had 9 and 7 previously with a different male). Bred him to a third experienced female this fall, no ties, she came up open. He is extremely interested in them, but mostly just humps them. Seems to have trouble getting an erection and penetrating. Any suggestions?

Really?? Did you think this was going to be easy??? Titles and awards do not a stud dog make. Some BSP and BSZS winners produce crap pups or no pups at all. How old is the male and how old were the females?? Some females won't let just any male breed them and some don't have text book heat cycles. The males sperm count would be a good place to start and letting the dogs get to know each other is also a good idea "before" the mating. I have mostly large aggressive females and a young, small, or inexperienced male will get his butt beaten badly if he does not show respect and good manners. One tie does not a mating make. Some females will party with the males when not in the productive part of the heat cycle and may ovulate late and miss the party.

He is almost 4, the females are between 3 1/2 and 5. All females are his personal "pack" and they get along great.

And this is not our first male or first go round with breeding. Just the first time our male hasn't been able to produce.

Perfect !, lol @ 'Some females will party with the males when not in the productive part of the heat cycle and may ovulate late and miss the party.'

The eggs are 'good' for about four days after ovulation. Not a huge window of opportunity to fertilize...especially when the female may 'stand' for days before and after ovulation. Three breedings every other day usually works to produce a litter.

Every mating does not work and a female that produces great at 2-3 years may have trouble getting and staying pregnant as she ages past 5 years .. Good food, plenty of exercise and check for underlying infections or health problems if you are serious about producing puppies. Sperm count, quality and motility for the male. Worst case scenario perhaps you have small litters or no litters but you can still enjoy the dogs. Females are most fertile at 18 months to 4 years and males drop off after 6 years. Some males can only have so many parties per week or month so multiple breeding back to back may fail while occasional breeding may be successful. Only one tie too early may cause no or low puppy production. At least two ties per breeding cycle but don't let the male party 24/7 as he may run out of bullets or energy too soon. Older dogs need rest between ties while the two year olds can party for a week.

His problem is with getting an erection and penetrating. Any advice with that? If that doesn't happen, ovulation/timing/days/etc is a mute point...

by joanro on 23 December 2015 - 18:12

The female has much to do with the male penetrating ( he can't penetrate a closed door) and if she is early or past 'ripe', he won't get turned on...pharamones are the key = ovulation = timing/ days. Timing is EVERYTHING in all of life.
