Link to an article about animal mental health.  Of course many of the problems involving mental health that animals have involve their contact and close living with human beings.  The science is plentiful that the great apes suffer many of the same mental and social problems as humans when kept in confinement or solitude.  Dogs likewise exhibit many of the social and mental problems of solitary confinement when raised alone or in kennels without sufficient canine or human nurturing.

I have personally witness many dogs committing suicide by starvation when abandoned... I volunteer at a shelter and the latest was a pointer mix that the owner got sick and the man's son didn't want the dog so put him in the shelter. the dog was healthy, noting wrong with in physically but he was so sad that he just stop eating... ended up in the vet being fed by a tube but it didn't made it...

But by the way, can dogs have double personality? or is it just a dominance/territorial issue?

Grief and empathy have been observed in canines both in the wild ( wolves ) and in domestic dogs and penned semi domesticated wolves. African wild dogs also seem to have the same mental and social tool kit as wolves and domestic dogs.
